Steering Wheel Question
I just purchased my first Cobra Replica. It currently has a black Grant sterring wheel with 5 holes. I would like to change it to a more vintage looking wood type wheel...
First, how can I adapt the 5 hole to a 6 or 9? Second, I'd like a smaller Sterring wheel, perhaps 13-14 inches to save leg room. Does anyone have any good recommendations on where to find one in the US? Thanks!!! |

You should be able to take the car to an automotive store that sells them and they can fix you up. That is what we did with a friends Cobra that had a wheel somewhat like yours but not quite as bad. One of the parts men came out, took the wheel off and took it in back and in about 2o minutes we were on our way with the new wood steering wheel and I think it was the 15" model..

What steering column/spline do you have? The boss can get matched to that.

Looks like a GM column. You'll need a hub to fit those splines.

That large nut in the center holds the steering wheel boss on. If you loosen (don't remove) that nut you will need a puller to get it off. You could also bolt the steering wheel back on, pull it up really hard and evenly and at the same time have someone (you trust) smack the shaft with a BFH and a brass punch. If you can get that loose remove the nut and you will see the splines underneath. Count them and measure the OD of them. A steering boss like this Moto-Lita, the Classic British Steering Wheel is readily available for common splines. As Larry said looks like a GM.

While you're at it, you might as well slap on a quick release hub. Working under the dash is much easier with the steering wheel removed. And "adjusting" the steering wheel so you can see the gauges you want to see, and so they're not blocked by the wheel spokes, is really easy when you have a quick release hub.

Okay, here is my assembly from Grant's webpage. I assume I need to remove everything to the steering column?

You would have to find out if the bolt circle is the same on whatever wheel you want to use and the adapter. I kind of doubt the bolt circles on the hubs are standard.
Normally you would use a wheel you like and their hub together. Most of us use Moto-Lita wheels as that's what original cars used. Original size was 16" but 15" is common in the replica world. Smaller than that gets a little strange looking IMO. Larry |
I would start with the wheel you want to look at and hold and work your way in, you can make anything fit. Find what works for a diameter and dish, figure it out from there. I don't think quick release wheels are street legal in many places, they are race car stuff.
