E & M on a 1977 Datsun Chassis/powertrain

Hi Guys,

I found a cobra...pretty low priced. It is an EM kit/mold that was placed on top of a 1977 chassis/v6 manual powertrain....thus put the bodymold on top of a datsun. He did upgrade to a 5 speed datsun trans.

He said it runs/drives...but needs some TLC.

FIRST, what is pros/cons of EM mold?

SECOND, thoughts on the 77 datsun underbody?

LAST, what do you think this vehicle is worth?

Thanks guys!

DanEC 02-06-2013 06:40 PM

Ohhh - this should get interesting. Any pictures?

If by E & M you mean Everett-Morrison, then the body should be strong enough to support itself on most any chassis. E-M bodies were known for their strength and weight. ... I can't comment on the merits of marrying such a body with a Datsun chassis, or its market value. I will say that such a car reminds me of those GT40 looking cars on VW frames, and I don't find them appealing.

Whoa there, 77 datsun was straight 6, not V6. Have you seen this car, or are you going soley by sellers description ?
Value, sight unseen: $500.00
Datsun WHAT chassis, Truck ? Z cars were unibody, I think, and very prone to rust.
Run Forrest, Run !!!!!

besides i personally think it will end up being a cluster F**k

pros----it will get good gas mileage
no one else will have one
cheap to maintain once its sorted out
no one will steal it once they have it started

cons----you will be stuck with it for your entire life
it will always be a rebodied datsun
performance of a polished turd
you will always be the subject of ridicule where ever you take it
even a 1974 impala will be a upgrade
it is probably titled as a datsun

it will be worth what ever you can get for a used EM body at the time
the rest will price at per pound.......

advise........let the current owner keep it

If it's salvage value is higher then what you can buy it for go for it.

Truck chassis was my first thought - I don't know of anything else they built back then with a full frame.

Personally, and I really don't want to offend anyone that has gone this route and put a lot of hard work into a conversion lke this. Now, that being said I would strongly suggest you keep your distance from this deal. Nothing is right and I am not sure you could ever make it right. The ONLY value I see, would be if the EM body was in good enough shape to do a Cobra right. But, you still would need another $20-$25K to do it right.

Some specks from Dasson on the 270z======= Just like the primary launch of a similar model, this automobile still uses the 3.7L DOHC V6 engine. Well, what are you able to expect from this engine? Pretty much, this engine will provide you with 332 horsepower. Moreover, do not get shocked when on your rpm-meter, you will be able to see up to 5200 rpm is performed by this engine. These can often an influence that you simply cannot even get from Porsche Cayman S. From 2012 Nissan 270z, however, you will be able to get this performance by saving up to $12000. Regarding the transmission, it is up to you either you would like it to be automatic or manual transmission.

I remember something like this in Kit Car mag. I think it was called a "Tomahawk" a Cobra like body on the Datsun Z car frame. I think it used the Z doors and windshield and modified the the frame. I will look for the mag.

I assume this post is a joke? Datsun never made a 270Z. It was a 240, 260, and 280Z. After that, they became Nissan if I recall and went to the 300Z.

No V6 either.

The Tomahawk doesn't look bad...if I wanted a Cobra wannabe.

Bill E 02-07-2013 04:05 PM

go to you tube and type in 270Z

joyridin' 02-07-2013 05:46 PM

Yeah, a new Nissan model, but not a 1977 version as the OP states.

Bill E 02-07-2013 06:37 PM

I think if he gets this for under 8K Bombings around with your foot flat on the floor can be a lot of fun. Good training for bigger bader version.

Franchise 02-08-2013 09:54 AM

sorry 280Z...

well, talked to him last night...apparently he feels it is worth some $$$. I told him I am at 8K, but sight unseen, I am not an offer. He seemed kind of offended by this, and retorted that he has already turned down 12K cash, and will keep it til he died for 8K. (I responded that 8K is still NOT an offer) then, bid him good luck in his endeavors....

just kind of delusional...for what I know outside of all this feedback is I was at 10K (sight unseen)

anyway...thanks for all the feedback!

For my money, I would keep saving. You get what you pay for. Have you driven the car yet, or is it a car that has to be finished?
