Mine is mounted under the dashboard on the right side. Have not had any problems to date with the MSD unit. I would think the less heat on the unit the better.

x2 on mounting it under the pass dash. The newer ones (Digital 6, 6AL-2, etc.) don't seem to be as prone to heat failure.
If it is a 6A or 6AL, just don't use it.
