bennett coachworks
Anyone have any comments (good or bad) about Bennett Coachworks in Milwaukee Wisconsin? Apparently the owner (Bob Bennett) worked on the first Excalibur Cobras and still works on them now.

Check the Arntz/Butler forum....real nice stuff about him and his version of Cobra history....interesting reading. He is the author of the thread. It was in 2009 so go all the way back.

Not sure it's the same Bennett. I know Paul Bennett in Freemont, CA worked on Arntz cobras. He made a new front suspension clip for my car.

I knew Paul Bennett and can say he was very talented. I have one of his space frame cars, Two sets of his wheels. He could make parts to fix csx2000 and csx3000 and had to all the time. Back before you could order the parts. Red csx3000 with big 198 on side and many others came to him for help.

Bennett coachworks
Thanks all,
This is definitely Robert Bennett, not Paul. (Wonder if there is any relation?)
I imagine there are more shops that might work on Cobras in California. Almost wish I was there. It's snowing here in Wisconsin and the car is stored away.
When it comes to Excalibur Cobras, I wonder if anyone has had any work done lately in the Milwaukee area. Bennett Coachworks seems to have some experience . . . I Just don't know them and I am looking for anyone that does. They do have a very extensive (lots of pictures) website showing some of their work http://www.hotrodbuilders.com/

What type of work are you looking for? The Excalibur was a copy of Classic Roadsters then updated to meet EPA standards. Nice cars, repaired many of them over the years. Wish they would have stayed in business---even if Uncle Sam did step on their toes!
Collapsible steering columns, 5 mph bumpers, side lights and the list went on and on!
DV
PS Dan, I don't think the link you provided is the same Excalibur company that built the Cobras?
Know more?

Excalibur Cobra
Looking forward to having him do a brakes upgrade and tuned exhaust/headers on on I just purchased. He just finished a full mechanical retro fit on my Son's '69 Z - 28 and it came out spectacular. Gary

Bennett Coachwerks in Milwaukee......
I would STRONGLY encourage you to get a written estimate for the complete job. (and then I would STRONGLY encourage you to go to the shop and speak with the owner every week to make sure he is not EXCEEDING the estimate in labor hours by ridiculous amounts)
I had this shop do paint and bodywork on one of my cars. The owner tried to charge me more than twice the original estimate without consulting me. The color did not match the first time, and nor did it match the second time they had to re-paint it! I was very close to taking him to court. He has been sued before and lost for the same things. I did not know this when I took my car there originally.
My advice would be to go ANYWHERE else. Seriously.
