Need help with intake height
Brent and I are trying to determine if he needs to mill my nicely contoured intake for additional hood clearance. I'm running an FE, Victor intake, and hood scoop.
It would be great if some of the people on the forum could help us with data points. If you are using an FE, what intake do you have, what air cleaner, and how much clearance between the top of the air cleaner and the hood? Thanks! |

Patrick - So reading through that post it appears you're using a Holley 4160 750 CFM and a "drop" air cleaner mount. And with those, you have almost 3/4" clearance (minus the height of the top of the nut). Did you mill down your intake, or is there anything else there I should know? Thanks for the help.

Actually, it would be great if you could measure vertically from where the top flange of the valve cover meets the intake to either the top of your intake, or the highest point on the air cleaner. Really appreciate it. |
It is the 427 MR, not the comp or dominator version. I measure the distance from the flange to the carb air cleaner acorn nut to be about nine and three quarters inches. Here's a pic with one of my kids holding the tape measure for you (not sure how much that pic helps, but it gave us something to do).

Here's a better one. With the tape measure resting on the top of the block plate, I measure the distance from the top of the block plate (Lakewood) to the top of air cleaner acorn nut to be just under 12 and three quarters inches -- maybe twelve and a half.

My comments are more generic than specific to your car, but maybe you'll find something helpful here. ... I had a carburetor clearance problem in one of my cars (non-Cobra) and discovered the following.
