The main problem with rebuilding the car seems to be the lack of doors and a hood. Do you know enough about the car to do a State title search and see if the prior owners can be found? Can't imagine why they would let the car go w/o the doors and hood - probably laying around someones garage, attic or warehouse collecting dust. If there is anyone near you who does metal work, building a tube structrure and aluminum skins for both like the originals would be a nice touch.

Car is a salvage car.. I expect a theft car.. they stole what you see missing. I guess. I have to repair it top get a salvage title.. I think it's not worth the effort to build them. I just don't have the time or the expertise. have a friend who knows someone at Shelby , here I vegas. Brought me some newer Shelby stuff today.. and a Heuer dashboard monte carlo timer .. cool.. Brand new too. Anyways.. he said he should have a door and a hood to try soon.. |
Unless I missed something in this thread, why not just contact one of the previous owners and ask? I bet they would know. Heck, I've had 2 owners call me on the Cobra I sold asking questions.

It looks like it is a salvage car bought at an auction or something like that. The OP says it was registered in California at one time. The problem is that California will not release any information on anybody or any vehicle at any time. It used to be (years ago) that you could go to the DMV with a license plate number and they would give you the address of the owner. They quit that many years ago. I am sure that there might be a way still. Maybe give the DMV your contact information and see if they will pass that on to the last owner by mail or something like that. I doubt it though. |

And the state ( ca) where it was vin'ed.. shows the last record with them was 1988. Not sure how else to get that info? |
you will need your local police to have what is called "a hand search" done to the record. nothing going back to 1988 is in the electronic data base once a car is not registered for a certain period its info is purged.
i just did this on a CA car myself. be forewarned the info may not be that comprehensive. likely will not tell you manufacturer, just owner and dates of registration if it is even found. |
Wife called the insurance company. As I am getting aggravated..
They would not tell us the prior owner.. But did say.. West Coast Autocraft in Cleverdale Ca has worked on the car.. Called and left a message. Maybe they will will have some info.. I hope. |
Ok folks..
We found the owner .. we'll owners son.. The car was in a collection, and vandels got in and stripped 5 of the cars... This was one of them.. It is a BUTLER body on a custom frame. Assembled and frame made by West coast Autocraft ( Chris ) and his father. They raced it in Nasa and something else.. a long time ago. It also has a special Built Jag rear. So at least now I know what I am looking for... will start searching in a minute. He said Butler is now gone.. so if I can't find doors/hood .. or have them made cost effectively.. I offered to sell it back to them... or just sell it on ebay and here.. Thanks to everyone for the input and feed back... |
Hood and doors should be fairly easy to make for the right person.
Make an aluminum frame (as was suggested before) and then skin it. |
