Kirkhams in Canada.
At the Risk of being put down again, I will ask another question;
I checked with Department of Transportation for Ontario Canada, and found out that new Kirkhams with an aluminum frame and body are not allowed into Ontario Canada. The units do not meet safety standards for the Province. :confused: http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../IMG_00016.JPG |
To be picky, Kirkhams do not have an "aluminum frame" and NO Cobra replica meets Transport Canada's safety standards (and they are federal rules, not provincal) as a "complete, assembled vehicle". It is under the self build regulations that replicas are allowed and then under very narrow regulations.
I for one have no problem with you promoting your "Boss" cars but please don't spread misinformation about the Canadian regulations. |

There is also a company that supplies Super Performance turn-key units in Woodstock Ontario that also OKed by Canada DOT. He builds his own motors, or is able to supply any power plant you wish. He has options for your choice of rear ends as well, or brakes, etc. His units are licenced by "Shelby". Besides, the reason I purchased a Boss unit was, they are built only 23 KLMS from my home. I also liked his welds, and the looks of his frame over the Super Performance. But, that is a personal opinion. Is it not? |

Just buy a cobra that is over 15 years old, then its legal in canada

You PM'ed me but you do not accept PMs so here is my reply to your message: Not trying to be a dick but I don't understand why you suddenly bring up an issue you seem to see with a Kirkham. I don't have a Kirkham but I am a Superformance dealer and I do deal with Transport Canada and understand the regulations for Canada and for Ontario. I hope you love your car when you get it (five years for build with a builder? I guess I don't understand that!) and I don't look down at anyone's Cobra. Different strokes for different folks. They are all cool and if what you have makes you happy, that's what it all about! It just seemed a little strange that you suddenly called out an issue you seem to think Kirkham has. ALL non self built Cobras in Canada have a tough road. Merry Christmas to you also. No hard feelings, just having a problem understanding what you are going for. |
BRM is a one man opperation. He has built 41 new units. Most of the components are hand made, one off parts. He currently has three other units under construction, including one complete rebuild. The rebuild is 15 years old, and has seen alot of missuse. It was a rental. The gentelman has re-manufactured at least 7 cobras of different makes in the last seven or so years.
I have been promised that I will be driving by April this coming year. Yes, it has been a long wait. But I feel that owning just what I want is worth the wait. Besides, I now have a great friend who enjoys the same things I do. I truely believe that "Having" is not pleaseing as "Wanting." In that way, I too am senile. :) |

Transport Canada won't allow kit cars or rollers (e.g. Kirkham, Superformance, Shelby continuation) into Canada. Period. 'Starter kits' are allowed, but it would seem only Factory Five has sorted out what it takes to produce allowable Starter Kits.
As previously noted, cars at least 15 years old can be imported into Canada, and you will need to meet safety standards. The Saskatchewan safety inspection requires the car meet the standards in effect at the time the car was first registered / completed - these are supposed to be federal standards, so all provinces s/b the same. My car was first registered in 1991, so it needs to have side marker lamps, side and rear reflectors meeting height requirements, 4-way flashers, centre-mounted brake lamp and daytime running lights. Hopefully none of that will fall off after my safety inspection has been completed. |
Actually we have gotten Transport Canada approval for our "Superformance by Riverside" starter kits. The Superformance factory (Hi Tech Automotive) will produce a special, TC approved "starter kit" for import into Canada. This is not available elsewhere and only via us and our Canadian agent.
We do not "dis-assemble" a roller to qualify. We do not, as one seller does "send all of the parts in first as once the frame/body show up they (Canada Customs) will be looking for the balance of the parts". We do it legal. We don't want (and assume neither do you) the authorities showing up on you door to seize the car you wanted for years, saved for and worked so hard to acquire. No dis to others, just stating how we sell into Canada......... |

Sounds like good news for Canadians (not Canucks - I hate that term) looking for Superformance cars. If you've been dealing with TC, you know they require any purchasers of "Superformance by Riverside", Factory Five or any other starter kits (even Canadian made) to source all powertrain, suspension and steering components from Canadian sources. This, of course, has nothing to do with real safety issues and everything to do with politics, trade protection and bureaucracy. Pardon my rant, but it really pi**** me off when government speaks free trade from one side of their mouths, then allows TC to do this under the guise of 'protecting Canadians'. |

I have wanted an AC Cobra since I was 20. I watch and read Club Cobra Forums ever chance I get. I am 64 now and drive a Volvo Tractor with a D 15 and an I-shift, 210 wheel base and a full shack`. (Truckers will Know what it is) It's getting time to get out of the game. I have only 'bout 200 hours left to finish my build. I am waiting for the cut down Currie 9 inch to arrive and then the zinc and powder coating to be done. The ratchet spool has been set up, and just needs to be bolted in. That is if my Dispatcher ever rounds me home again.

Superformance starter kits for Canada
MK III starter kits, built by Hi-Tech, have been around for quite a while. We've been selling them to Canadian customers for several years. Nevada Classics (Nevada Classics: Muscle Cars, Vintage Cars and Classic Cars for Sale) has them available today.
While we don't sell the components you will need to complete the starter kit, we can refer you to US and Canadian sources to purchase the requisite "donor parts". This isn't anything new, and it is perfectly legal. There is NO REQUIREMENT to purchase donor parts from Canadian sources. Because of NAFTA, you can order parts from the US or Canada to complete the project, and be exempt from import duty except for GST and PST. (Note, there is no PST in Alberta.) Transport Canada does not allow a rolling chassis to be disassembled and sent across the border as parts, then reassembled as a rolling chassis. Nevada Classics sells a starter kit. That's all. If you want to purchase the rest of the parts necessary, we can refer you to a number Canadian and US resources that will supply them. |
Shelby starter kits are available in Canada from Nevada Classics in the US. They only sell starter kits, but can refer you to sources for the rest of the components you need to complete an authentic Shelby Cobra. The process of getting one into Canada is pretty straightforward. Play by the rules, and it's no problem. Go to Nevada Classics: Muscle Cars, Vintage Cars and Classic Cars for Sale for more info.
