Default Hood vents/louvers

It seems that most of my driving lately has been in high density stop and go traffic, and even with the fan running continually , the under hood temp creeps up. Not extreme, but Id like to keep it cooler by moving more air while stopped. I'm thinking hood vents will help, such as Morris or Dallas have. I recognize Morris' as s.s.marine units, but I would prefer something more subtle, so if you have them on your car, please post pic and how they work for you. Have done internet search and e-bay till my eyes have permenently crossed, with no good options.

Yes, Tom Kirkham.

Mine are fiberglass louvers from Maier Racing.
I had to bond them on to the hood but I don't think they would work very well on a metal hood.

I 'think' Tom helped with the hood vents on Morris's car, but I don't know that for sure.

You could vent the hood like the Gumball Rally cars had. Subtle and old-school.

Hi Larry, not familiar with the Gumball vents, could you elaborate?

Dallas:
Got on Maiers web site and searched for louvers, which came up empty, although they did show them as part of complete hoods. I'll call them later and see if they sell the louvers separately . Do you remember if this was the case when you ordered yours ?
Thanks,
Ted

Fatboy: thanks for the pic. I had forgotten about that type of vent. Almost looks too modern for a Cobra !!

Yes, you have to call them but they will know exactly what you are talking about. I think they call them Shelby GT 500 louvers.

Yes, that's them! They do look a little modern but then remember, those were installed at some point more than 38 years ago. All of a sudden, they don't look so modern anymore.

Anyone got any pictures of them?

One way I have been doing the hood vents for other cars is the buy the egg crate steel mesh, then cutting what ever style I want into the hood.

Then I just bond the mesh to the underside of the hood.

Here is a truck I finished about a year ago, a 90 Mazda B2200 [and, I know it don't look like a Mazda anymore......lol]

CSX8034 was parked close to me at SAAC 38 and has some clean vents on hood. Sorry but I can't find good picture yet.

The vents must be placed in a high pressure area to move air into the engine compartment, and vise-versa (low pressure) to move air out. Maybe small fans in the side louvre vents would accomplish the same thing, especially when you are not moving. Hood louvers are just so..... Permanent.

Probably more so on a metal hood. I could cut them out and reglass the area if I wanted to.

Which I don't.

I never latched the hood down thinking it might lift once the speeds started to rise but what a surprise when it never happened. I used the brake duct vents using the original flexible tubing ending one aimed at the starter the left side aimed at the headers.

The coolant stays around 190 degrees all the time thinking my attempts to keep things cool for the big block are working. Once the engine has been at 190 for a while especially in the summer heat the fan runs most all the time.
At first did consider fans at the fender vents before getting comfortable with present setup.

We are working up a Superformance clone of the Gumball car for a customer. Hood vents, light bar and all....without the dents!

We can supply the Gumball vents from the factory as a special order option on a new chassis.
