Good price for an aluminum CSX as I have seen CSX fiberglass cars sell for that. Clearly he needs to get all the facts on the motor ie; internals, who built it etc. The early cars came through Vegas and Mexico but I thought the aluminum cars were from Kirkham, but lots of people could of built it from a authorized Shelby dealer to the guy down the street. Also, $120K seems too cheap seeing that a fiberglass roller is in the $90s now, so might see if he could trace down the previous owner.

RodKnock 07-15-2014 08:20 PM

The SAAC Registry states "CSX4145. Aluminum body. Completed 2/21/00. Dealer: All Pro Cars (Muncie, PA). Trigo wheels; chrome roll bar. Purchased by James Furman (Manassas, VA)."

Not much to go by, but at $120,000 or $130,000, if that is what it's sold for, would be "WELL BOUGHT.' Some details are lacking, but this would/could be a blow to Evan's theory that "aluminum CSX's are worth $200,000." Supposedly, aluminum CSX rollers are $160,000.

However, the auction is not done and the bidding continues from it's current $110,000 level.

gsharapa 07-15-2014 08:26 PM

Interesting that a simple Google search shows it has been for sale in Ca and the current dealer also had it for sale for $110K. Looks like it went though Kruse auction back in 2001.

Does anyone know anything about the builder? They have a web site that is truly ancient.

there is a Kirkham 427 Cobra roller on ebay, auction ends in 3 hrs, current bid $67K.

Don't believe any metal cars came out of Mexico.

RodKnock 07-16-2014 10:30 AM

For 2,000-ish miles, the car seems a bit more worn than I'd expect. And I don't think the builder was interested in originality when assembling CSX4145. The fuel fittings are annoying as are the bumpers on an S/C car. And removing the POS BFG TA's would be the first order of business. A few other items that I'd change as well.

Totally agree with all that you stated. My thoughts are that it had a speedometer failure/replacement 2,000-ish miles ago.

BTW, the buyer is already bragging on that GT Forum thread that he has bought the car. But, hey, if he paid $130K for an all alloy "CSX", I believe that will be viewed as well bought in 3-5 years. That would also give him enough time to fix many of the details and rejuvenate that exterior and interior.

RodKnock 07-16-2014 11:45 AM

Also, the "96" on/in the center stripes is odd. No meatball. I wonder if that's easily removable?

Before spending $130,000 or whatever, I'd want a lot of details on that engine. That's about a $20,000 +/- item that could be a large swing in value.

Hehe, the owner is Lee Benson. Was up to see him before I purchased a CSX4k car. He had a LOT of projects going on at the time. Some of which were back in a quonset hut shop behind the main shop. Nice fella, just a little disorganized for my taste. I dont mind a working shop looking busy just not cluttered with piles of stuff (and junk) everywhere.

He had a couple of freshly completed examples on hand. A slabside and an S/C car. Both were turned out to a high degree of quality.

He was heavily involved in Daytona Coupes at the time. Two in the shop in various stages of completion.

:)

Wow, kind of a snarky bunch on this forum, huh?

I am soon to be the new owner of CSX 4145. I signed up for an account here a few days ago in hopes of garnering some info from you folks, to better learn about this car. Unfortunately, there was quite a delay in activating my account, and I wasn't able to post until today.

I'm not sure how what I typed on the Ford GT Forum would be construed as "bragging". This is what I said there:

Well, looks like I will soon be the new owner of CSX #4145. The car is not perfect and needs some minor sorting, but perfect for me since I plan to drive the car some, and there's no sense paying top-dollar for a pristine car that I would be afraid to use. I think an aluminum-body CSX with all-aluminum Shelby 427 will probably do fine value-wise over time, especially for what I paid for it.

Many, MANY thanks go out to Sinovac here, who was gracious enough to check out the car in detail today and take it for a spin. I appreciate the detailed report! Now at least I know what I am dealing with, and this allowed me to be much more comfortable in making the decision to purchase, and what I was willing to pay. Sinovac is obviously quite knowledgeable on Cobras also. Thank you also to everybody else, above, who helped me out with advice. I have a lot of learning to do about every facet of my new toy. I'll try to soak it all in, like I did with the FGT over a year ago. Time to order some books and spend countless hours on the Cobra forums now...
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe I won't be spending much time on this forum, after all.

John, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to find me through the Ford GT Forum. That was very kind of you, and I truly appreciate it. I sent you an email explaining what I found out since we talked. This car is definitely not built to everybody's liking, and there are some things that I will be changing when I get it, but for the price, I am willing to take some risks. My dream of someday owning a genuine aluminum-bodied Shelby Cobra is coming true.

Those are all things that may have been changed by subsequent owners. But I agree- some inconsistencies in the philosophy and history of the car need to be addressed.

Welcome aboard. Don't be thin skinned or let them bother ya. There are some pretty self appointed keyboard punching experts wherever you go. It looks like you did well on that and it will sure bring you some fun while it appreciates. I'd like to see some more detailed pictures when you get it. I have seen some common errors that can be easily corrected.
One of the first as suggested already is tire choice.

Welcome aboard CC for however long you are here. I'll show you to your room in steerage with all the other CSX owners here. Been a Shelby Cobra owner for 13 years and around here for about the same time.

Dealing with "snarkyness" is a good day for a CSX owner here.

Congrats on your purchase. Fantastic buy even if the car needs some "loving" and work.

If you decide to stick around pick up a SAAC Registry. Kind of like garlic is to vampires with the sour grapes bunch here. Just cite the Registry when appropriate. You will learn what I mean if you are here long enough. They hate that.

If I can help with anything let me know.

BTW I am also an FGT owner and a member on the FGT forum.

Congrats and don't let anyone one here knock what you own. This place is not as warm and fuzzy as the FGTforum.

Car sold for well under market. Fantastic buy. However, just like original Cobras, the price of Continuation cars vary based on many factors. You still can't duplicate even that car new for $160K today.

Can't escape the fact that if you want a new aluminum Shelby you are over a year out on wait and lighter in the wallet $160K for the rolling chassis.

SFSDFGT 07-16-2014 10:23 PM

Thanks for the welcome, guys. Sorry if I was too defensive in my first posts.

I have been mostly a vintage musclecar guy, mainly mopars and a few fords. I have read and heard a lot of folklore about the 427 Cobras, but only in the last few years did I think I might be able to get one someday. I really need to study up more on the history of the car, and what people here find to be the best setups for the car.

It is apparent that my car is coming to me with tires that are scorned here. What is the issue with these ones, and which tires are preferred and why?

I do plan on removing the roundels/numbers.

As far as the bumpers, can these chrome pieces just be unbolted, and then will it look correct? Or are there different pieces altogether that are supposed to be there?

A lot of work has been done to the car over the past 8 months, but obviously there is more to do. What other glaring errors do others here see, that I might want to address?

Th car has the original-style Girling brakes. Would anybody favor leaving them, or is changing them to Wilwood or Baer or something be a no-brainer? Keep in mind, I am used to crappy brakes in my old cars and this doesn't bother me. When I want to go fast, stop fast, turn fast, etc I just take out a different car.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
