Signature protection

Hey, everybody, got an easy question. I was fortunate enough, like many others, to get Shelby's signature on the glove box cover of my Superformance before he passed. He had a "good day" when he signed it back in Jan. of 2011. Anyway, my son noticed a bit of fade a few days ago which got me to thinking I ought to do something to protect this... forever! I have to assume he used a silver paint pen. So considering the glove box cover is vinyl (I think) what do any of you recommend I use to cover said signature? Perhaps some type of matt-finish overspray that hopefully won't damage the paint? Or perhaps a plastic covering of some sort? I can ask an art supply store for their recommendation but me thinks there are those of you that have already traveled this road and have a good suggestion. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!

I don't have anything to offer to put on there to protect it from the elements, but if I had his sig on my glove box and really wanted it to last, then I would put it in my display case with my other collectibles, and buy another glove box door.

Wouldn't worry about it. You can always get another.
Get A Commemorative Signature | The Carroll Shelby Foundation
The girls at CSF are still signing anything you send int for a contribution like they always have. ;)

I wonder how many morons, er, I mean customers, buy the "simulated signature"?

You see, that supports my initial description of the "folks" that buy them. ;)

Well, no signature for you now. Chas will get two.:p I'll ask the girls to turn the cardboard upside down so the signatures don't look exactly the same.;)

You can topcoat it with SEM semi-luster clear plastic and vinyl coating that is available in a spray can. The problem is that you can't clean the surface thoroughly before applying the coating for fear of removing the signature. This could result in peeling and lifting later if any Armoral or other treatments have been applied to the door. Careful cleaning of the door around the signature and then applying a couple very light coats of clear might work. But probably removing it and replacing it with another glovebox door as Rokfor suggested is the easiest approach if you want to preserve it.

I have thought of making badges to put on the VCs with my kids names on them as opposed to the 427 Ford badges.

If you are keen to preserve it then perhaps it is best to put in a box and purchase a commemorative version as per above to put in its place.

FWIW: Autographs/signatures/selfies (of or with celebs) do nothing for me if I'm honest... but to each their own.

The other alternative is to measure and cut a piece of clear plastic at some place like Tap Plastics that can be screwed into the glove box door and still keep the glove box door operable.

Once you have that in place, then I'd install a combo infrared, motion detector and security camera system, focused solely on the signature, similar to securing other important documents, say like the Constitution, in order to secure it from folks walking around shows with cleaning products, which if you think about it, is quite common.

As Dimis said, I'm not a signature kinda guy either, unless it's on the bottom of a check made payable to me. ;)

Print out that simulated signature from their website, and then trace it onto a fresh glovebox, then two pack clear over it. Perfect replica signature for your replica. ...... Or what I really think, just don't worry. If it wears out, such is life. More likely to damage it mucking about. No point in putting it in a cupboard either.

Words of wisdom; after all, the signer wore out...............

kniteridr60 09-04-2014 07:47 AM

That's really funny, RodKnock. I really had a good laugh at the security system solution. I agree with all the comments and I realize it's just a signature but thought the investment was worth some type of protection... maybe a guard dog... hey, wait a minute... I could mount one of those hood ornament bull dogs off a mack truck. Nah, a cobra is more intimidating. Thanks for the suggestions folks!

Mastiff107 09-04-2014 01:54 PM

If you're talking value based on rarity, I would opt for a glove box without his signature on it. I've seen a lot fewer of them.

Got the Bug 09-04-2014 02:05 PM

Stands to reason that the "replica" signature is less expensive than the original.

You could also buy another glove box and put the signed one in a hermetically sealed chamber.
