Default Stamping a reproduction chassis plate

I got my reproduction chassis plate and want to stamp it so it looks like an original. Not for the purposes of defrauding or lying to people, but for that authentic period correct look. What was used to make the imprint? I have a set of punches and need to know "how" to do it without ruining the plate.

Thanks
Bill D

I hope you know someone with an arbor press, if so you can clamp them in row and press them into your plaque.

Use a cardboard underneath so you get a nice form...

Everything was going great until the last character to be stamped. I inadvertently stamped the digit sideways. ****! Now I'll buy 5 and hope I can make 1 correct.

In the photos I've seen of originals most looked like they were engraved by hand.

The examples that I have looked at seemed to be either stamped by hand, meaning that the numbers were stamped individually, or as Al G says engraved. I'm sure there are members that are more knowledgeable that can chime in on this one.

The 3000 series were hand engraved.

Bill, just take it to your local trophy shop, along with a blowup of a picture of the real McCoy, and they'll copy the look perfectly for you -- it's what they do for a living.
