Default Sorry. Gotta Vent About NJ MVC

I recently purchased a Superformance MK III titled as a 1965 Ford Cobra. I had no NJMVC problems with the registration process and breezed right through. I dealt with two employees and they were nothing but very helpful and friendly. I then decided to apply for personalized plates. I set up an online account with the MVC and started entering the personalized plates I considered. Among others, I tried to get 65COBRA, but it was unavailable. But then I tried 65C0BRA with a zero in place of the letter O. Lo and behold 65C0BRA was available. However, there was a disclaimer that said, in essence, all submissions are subject to final approval. So I paid the fee, submitted the plate request and waited with baited breath for the reply.

This is the email I received from the MVC:

Thank you for your interest in New Jersey's personalized plates. Unfortunately your request must be denied at this time due to the reason(s) stated below.
Requested Plate Number: 65C0BRA
Reason for Denial: Can't substitute zero for the letter "O" or vise versa.

WTH?!?!?!?

I guess I am sticking with the state issued plates.

Sorry, if they allowed it, your car could be confused with another, should that other car be used in a crime, then you could be in for a world of trouble. Hence the no duplicate rules. NJ is not the only state. Figure out something else, like SPF CBRA, or SPF MKIII, of FPSB.

??? O's and 0's are used in everyday plates. Could SP00703 be confused with SPOO703? What about 1's and I's? What if the plate on my everyday driver is VAI 126. Is VA1 I26 any different? Yes it is. Will the state not issue any plates where I's and 1's or O's and 0's occupy the same space on different plates?

Just be glad that you managed to get your SPF registered as a 1965 Ford in NJ. Forget the vanity plate and move on quietly into the NJ sunset.

Just be glad they accepted your 1965 registration in NJ and move along. You'd have a much bigger gripe if they laid their law down fully.

Lots of ideas for vanity plates in this thread - it's 72 pages long! Cool Cobra tags

I know. I know. There are worse things I could be worrying about. Chaplin and Cashburn, I almost purchased an SP that was titled as a 2000 but I backed out of the deal because I figured I would not get the car through emissions testing.

Yeah, at least you got it registered.

I've gotten personalized plates in both CO and NV. Both disallow zero and allow "oh".

Try "CO8RA"...... The 8 Looks close enough to a B. Worked for me in Idaho. I had the same issue there as you did with the 0 and O.
