Shelby Cobra Continuation Series Production numbers are here
The below was just received by me from Gary Patterson at SAI:
Evan These are really close numbers not counting work in progress. We just sold the 50 50th anniversary 427 cars of which most (over 30) will be aluminum. All will be CSX4550 - CSX4599 serial numbers. We have a few 50th anniversary 289 cars left if anyone is interested. I also know where two aluminum 40th anniversary cars are that are available were completed with Shelby aluminum 427 engines. Great to speak with you and hope this helps. CSX1000 – 23 cars all aluminum CSX4000 – approx.. 650 cars with 200 aluminum, 10 carbon fiber and the balance are fiberglass CSX6000 – Just over 100 so far with, 2 aluminum, rest are fiberglass CSX7000 – 65 cars total, 20 aluminum, rest are fiberglass CSX8000 – 53 cars total, 5 aluminum, rest are fiberglass Gary |

Interesting and surprised; didn't think it was that many.

Thanks for posting. Great information. Did not know they were holding back CSX4000 numbers for the 50th cars.
Interesting 250 Aluminum Continuation Cobras Total, including the recent 50th Aluminum cars and 289 Style cars. Less Aluminum Continuations from Shelby in his living years than 1960's Originals. For fun, see below original 1960's production numbers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COBRA PRODUCTION TOTALS 1962-65 260 Cobras Street Cars.............................62 Factory Teams Cars (initially 260 engines then updated to 289)................4 Factory Prepared Competition Cars (initially with 260 engines then updated to 289) .................................................. .1 Independently-prepared competition race cars...............7 Dragonsnake (initially 260 engines then updated to 289)...........................1 Total 260 Cobras ......................75 289 Cobras Street Cobras .........................455 Standard Competition.................2 Sebring Cobras...........................3 LeMans Cobras.........................3 427 Prototypes............................1 427 Prototypes 'Flip-Top"...........1 FIA Roadsters.............................5 Daytona Coupes...........................6 USRRC Roadsters......................6 Total Factory Team Cars............29 Factory Prepared Competition Cobras Standard Competition....................2 LeMans Prototype.........................1 LeMans Replica............................3 USRRC Roadsters.........................5 Independently-Prepared Race Cobras................................21 Dragonsnake Cobras....................2 COB/COX* Street Cobras...........60 COB/COX* Race Cobra...............1 Total 289 Cobras........................580 Total small block Cobras.......... 655 *(COB - Cobras for Great Britain) *(COX Cobras for export other than to Great Britain) Coil Spring Big Block Cobras Street Cars ................................260 Prototype Competition Roadsters......................................2 Production Competition Roadsters....................................19 Semi-Competition Roadsters........31 Daytona Super Coupe...................1 Chassis Only..................................3 COB/COX Cobras.......................32 1965-67 427 & 428 Cobras ..... 348 ------ Total Cobras Built ............... 1,003 |
There were clearly more original series cobras built in a shorter period of time and in total then the total of continuation series. The number of continuation series cobra is less and the rate of production is also less. However production and sales are still going on but at a relatively slow rate.
The number of Continuation Series Cobras built during Shelby's life and tenure at SAI is limited and finite at this juncture as of May 2012. |
Thanks Evan for the legwork. I really didn't think we'd get these numbers. Thanks also to Gary for pulling the numbers together.

"COX" cars were for export other than the USA and the UK. I know...nit-picking!;)

Thanks Evan and Gary, interesting stuff.

Only three CSX 8000 outside the 50th anniversary run? I would have guessed more.
|
Your welcome guys.

Correct. Was supposed to be 31 not 1. I'll edit that.

Maybe they're only counting cars in end user's hands. Even the last registry shows 24 CSX8000's, not counting any 50th Anniversary cars. |
Very cool thread! :p

Out of the (998, by A-Snake count) built, how many have been destroyed?
|
The last paragraph is incorrect. The COB/COX cars should not be listed under "big block" Cobras since they weren't big blocks. That should read "coil spring." Nor were there 32 of them; there were 27 in total plus 5 bare chassis that were commissioned for Paramount Pictures for use as movie props with custom body work. These were never Cobras, so those are the 5 chassis that were removed from the claimed 1003 production total to arrive at the final number of 998.
|
The COB/COX AC cars were never designated as "Cobras" when they were built, they were branded as "AC 289 Sports" and had no Shelby connection.
LOL, "DESTROYED", heck they've reproduced!!! |
I think John, that "AC 289 Sports" refers to the later coil spring cars produced by AC Cars Ltd.
The COB/COX leaf spring cars were Cobra's and badged as such on the nose, and with the "AC" badge on the rear. Ned can set us straight though. Larry |
I know that the AC 289 Sports were all (of course) small blocks in the "427" MKll body, but weren't some of the earlier COB/COX cars built as big block 427 AC Cobras?
