Power Passenger Lift Seat Project |
Maybe this will help out. Concerned about burned legs, I wrapped my sidepipes (muffler area only) with exhaust manifold fibreglass tape from Summit, then mounted sidepipe covers from Finishline. After a spirited drive the pipes are warm to the touch, not hot enough to burn your leg. Made "The Boss" happy.........

I got snakebit on my first outing in my Backdraft, but never since... and I always caution passengers to "watch the pipes" when exiting. And I never leave my car out of site in public... ESPECIALLY while the pipes are still hot. The larger cockpit of the Backdraft IS nice, and tends to enhance ingress/egress... I believe Lonestar's have a chassis that's stretched even further.

why not fit heat shields?

I have the heat shields on my side pipes, and everything is ceramic coated.
All of the issues mentioned still exist, by a lesser degree. I have still burned myself on the pipes that exit the car, ahead of the shields. I was adjusting the carb. Also; when I go to car cruises or shows, I never leave the car for the first 1/2 to 3/4 hour. Children can really get in trouble if you don't watch them! I always help my wife out of the car, so we are sure that her legs do not touch the heat shields. (Still HOT) I like the welding blanket idea too. Don |
I have a removable steering wheel on my ERA that would make it easier to get in and out, though thankfully I can do it now without removing the wheel.

I don't know what color your sidepipes are, but I think a lot of people are deceived by theories that silver or white ceramic coatings are cooler to the touch and less likely to burn you. IR temperature guns are calibrated to read a flat black surface. They don't read light or reflective surfaces accurately. You believe they should be cooler but they aren't (at least not very much) and will fry your skin just like any other exhaust pipe or header.
