Why do GoodYear billboards suck
I would love to use the billboards on my next build, but dang, everybody says they are square... Why are they , aren't they racing tires....
They say the Avon's are better, are they? Do GoodYears have to run inner tubes. You would think as many replicas is out there that Coker would step up and make a "Cobra" tire that would look like a Goodyear bill board and in radial. Yes, that's the ticket. |
Avon's are the modern day way to go.
Billboards were never really meant to be used for regular street driving. Bill S. |
No inner tubes here. I just love the look so that's why they are on mine.

Tredwear.com can make your tires look like billboards.

BillBoards look great , but I have said this before. They are NOT street legal and if you got into an accident, a serious accident maybe somebody is killed. If the insurance investigator is sharp and picks up that you were running non DOT tires , your insurance could be voided and you could be charged with a crime. It would be "willful Disregard". Billboards look great but are they worth a multi million dollar judgment against you and possible jail????????
|
"Willful disregard"...In reality, odds are against finding 12 jurors that would all agree beyond a shadow of a doubt to that charge. I'm not trying to be difficult here, just realistic.
To the OP, simply just not enough volume to interest a manufacturer to invest in molds, etc. It's a topic that gets discussed here about every year or so. I agree that if Coker won't do it, than that pretty much tells you all you need to know. |
I think they are awesome, have you ever used BFG tires that guys run which are absolutely the worst idea tire for these car, too much power for that crap tire...

Civil Trial - "Preponderance of the evidence" (greater than 50/50) is the standard to win a case. Notwithstanding any type of case before a court, I would not drive on Billboards. Period. |
Oh Rod, you're the ideal candidate for Billboards...you never drive your perfect Kirkham (I say that in a positive sense) so you would never be a law breaker. ;-)
|
Al, it's not so much that they suck...they just don't swallow.
You deserve Avons. |
So it seems that nobody knows why they are fit to race with but not ride down the road with. If they are bumpy on the street, you could not race with them.
On the Coker thing... how about a email bombardment to Coker... Maybe they just don' know how many folks would like a modern billboard radial, street legal |
Al ... I have a different slant on those tires than most here do . I used to race SCCA in E/P ( National competition license ) and ran the Goodyear Bluestreaks . First , they are horrible in the wet , don`t really stick all that well until they get up to temperature on the track and being bias ply tires , they will flat spot on you in a heartbeat . In the pits , we jacked the car up so the tires wouldn`t flat spot .
When I talked to a Goodyear engineer , he told me the tires won`t have the life of a street tire since they don`t have the plasticizers(sp? ) etc in the compounds the street tires do and will get hard as a rock . All Goodyear wanted them to do was last long enough to finish one or two races . The design parameters were/are all for the track and not the steet . I personally knew a man that put Bluestreaks on his street car , went for a drive in the mountains , hit a slick spot on a blind curve , crashed and his wife was killed . I`m not going to take that chance . Personally , I run Avons and would only run the Goodyears on the track .... period . My opinion .... do yourself a favor and run the Avons , leave the Goodyears for the track . Bob |
Here is another option: you can get smooth sidewall radial tires from Diamond Back Tires (dbtires.com). Then get the tire stencils from Raceline Digital. The Look of the Goodyear Billboards on modern radial tires at a very reasonable price

Bill D, would like to see pics of your car. Sounds interesting.

I have recently gone over from BB's to Avons as well.
My BB's had less than 500 miles on them and after the car sat for several months in the garage they started cracking and splitting, then one by one just blew out (literally) from the sidewalls. I also spoke to a Goodyear Racing rep who told me that the compound in these tires have no preservative or plastisizers. He said they are made to buy on Friday, race all weekend and toss them on Monday. I asked why they don't make the BB's in a modern radial like Avons and he said the demand was not big enough for that investment. |

Like was stated they are race tires with a life expectancy measured in one race or less. Can you imagine driving on those tires on the Mulsanne Straight at speeds of 200+MPH?
