Exclamation Product Survey: Shift Boots

In development with a specialized company to make a better shift boot. The shift boots everyone uses seem relatively universal. And in our experience they all seem to rip or tear at some point in ownership requiring replacement.

Looking to get a feel for how many people have replaced theirs for tearing and how many times over the years?

Would you be interested in a superior product that would not tear and look identical to the current industry standard?

Do you have a "standard" shifter handle that is round or an aftermarket style that is rectangular such as Hurst or Roush etc?

Product would sell at $38.95, It would be made in the USA and would come with a 15 year guarantee.

Replaced mine when it tore installing the Hurst shifter I bought from you. No clue how long the new one will last but I am ready to buy a better quality, better fitting piece.

I have replaced mine twice. The problem with all the current round ones are they are a bit too small for a 6 speed shift pattern.

I use a Kirkham round stick and their shifter boot, it comes in rubber or leather...

I have used the OEM Galaxie boot on my CCX and Goldie. Each have lasted well 5 years+ on CCX and 4 on the 289.
If you make a OEM style be sure to get seamless look.

I would be interested if it was accurate to the original shift boot. Otherwise, nope.

I have the standard "reverse" shifter, and I have replaced my boot once with the thinner rubber boot that fits the Sunbeam Tiger. It looks the same as the thicker boot that everyone sells, but it does not pull the shifter out of gear when the rubber is cold and stiff. If it lasts a few years that will be fine as I'll just replace it again -- I'll let you know. I bought it from Sunbeam Specialties in Campbell, CA. You have to fax them the order as they don't have an on-line ordering system. It costs about $25.

Here's their site: Sunbeam Specialties - Number 1 Source for Rootes Sunbeam Alpine-Tiger Parts. You can peruse the catalog on line, but you have to print out the order page, fill it in, and either fax it or email it back. You can't just order on line. It's kind of a throw-back to the old days of buying stuff. But it is a nice solution to the age old "my transmission pops out of gear" problem while still having the classic boot look. They ship fast, too.

My standard rubber shift boot cracked. I bought a new one from a vendor on this site and it pulled my shifter out of gear. Way too stiff! I bought a leather(vinyl) one from Olthoff and put it on top of the split rubber one. No more problems. My biggest concern would be having the shifter being pulled out of gear. A real PITA during spirited driving.

Same here. Replaced mine with the Sunbeam Tiger boot from Sunbeam Specialties due to an occasional pop out of 3rd gear. Since I installed the Sunbeam Tiger boot it has not popped out of gear. It's a big improvement over the stiff, usual one.

If we only fulfilled orders by fax, would there be greater interest?

Adding to discussion some...

The product would not have any seams. And the material would be "softer" than the hard rubber that is causing these "out of gear" conditions.

However, response does not seem high enough to support the investment.

Lots of times, that is the case. People complain about something, so a solution is offered. Then the complainers see the price and complain more. Good Lord. Our hobby costs money. My shift boot is fine, but to get a new one for 40 bucks with what pretty much comes with a lifetime guarantee...of course I would be in for that. Heck, I was sold when Cashburn said it didn't have mold lines. And was thin enough to improve shift feel.
