tire life
Been looking on the site regarding how long to keep tires on a car. Bought my Backdraft new in 08, now have 20,000 on it. the tires are BFG, a lot of tread left, no cracks or splitting. Should I get new tires or just hang with these? They aren't giving me any problems:confused:

BFG's are not the best tire out there, they do not handle very well. You are about 2 years from needing a new set, 10 years is the absolute max that you should use any tire, irrespective of wear or cracks, etc. You should probably start looking at other tire options and see what is available within your price range.

Looked at Cooper Cobra G/T, Hankook Ventus H101 and Nitto 555 to replace my Goodrich tires, Just street tires no race.suggestions?

If you're getting 20K miles on a set of tires, you're not doing it right.
at 9.6K, My fronts are about done, and the second set on the rear are about done.

Lots of variable factors involved in this - no clear answers. I have an old Corvette with about 23 years on the tires (BF Goodrich by the way but not T/As) but only a few thousand miles - sits covered up in the garage mostly - never goes to car shows or sits outside. Still look fine also - but I know I need to replace them. My 2003 Lightning F! Eagles gave up the fight last summer after 15k miles when one developed a leak from a tiny crack in the sidewall. The truck was only used a year for commuting but goes to car shows and Lowe's regularly. With 20K miles I suspect your tires have had a fair amount of exposure to sunlight and ozone but like 1795 said you probably are good for a couple more years. But no guarantees.

Get rid of the BFG's!
They are dangerous on a light car like yours. Work great on a Chevelle, but not these.
Top shelf would be a set of Avons, but it depends on your budget. The Avons will change your entire driving experience!;):cool:

Jim,
No he is two years PAST replacing the BFGs! They get very hard with age. While they may look fine, one drive on fresh rubber will show the folly of this "extended tire life" idea.
Next to fuel ,tires are about the cheapest cost for the miles we do in these cars, why risk your car AND YOUR NECK to save a few bucks and "get a few more miles out of the old donuts" |

I was told by my Tyre shop that they only warranty tires for 6 years.

I'm ashamed to say that my BFGs lasted 20 years but were WAAAAY past their sell by date - turned the car into a real drift car and even with a near standard Chevy 350 I had no problem wheel spinning so they were quiet good fun.
Although they looked fine from the outside the sidewalls tore off the bead when trying to remove them as they were rotten inside.

You didn't mention if they are 15"s? Less selection unfortunately. I replaced my bfg with Cooper Cobras (15") and they have better traction. I assume they will wear out much faster as a result. It's a trade off. My car was pulling left pretty bad, decided to replace the worn tires first. Pull disappeared.

I agree 6 years is the industry standard,
I have sold thousands of tires from my shop. I feel I speak from years od experience

No one has mentioned Michelin which is an outstanding tire. I have them on my ERA Slabside.

I've heard the same complaint about Michelins. They're great on an SL 65AMG, but a Cobra is too light to keep them warm and sticky.
I've been happy with the Khumo Exstas and Toyo R888. They bite and go.

I owed for twelve years a Lone Star with BFG tires which were alright. The Michelins on my ERA Slabside are far superior in roadability, stopping and starting.

Desgros- which model and tire size are you talking about?
If you're referring to something like a 180 width XAS, I'd agree that they have a brilliant reputation but the sizing is unfortunately irrelevant to the question re: 427 Cobras.

The BFG on my car are 295/50 15 back and 235/60 15 front.
