You're correct that RM and the "historian" at Shelby American in Las Vegas still tell the 'story'.
Even Arron Shelby (grandson) somewhat related the story just before the auction.
Do a search of CSX2000 paint on Google and you'll see photos, I believe at SEMA, that shows chipped blue paint that exposes the original yellow paint.
