Cobra Question True or False

In a resent article in ReInCarNation, Grey Phantom Ls3 Powered Shell Valley Cobra - ReinCarNation Magazine The author wrote "Ironically enough, years later Cobras raced in Europe with Chevy engines". By years later does he mean non -Shelby factory cobra's maybe AC or Autocraft?. Is this true? I have searched the internet, my older cobra books and have not found any mention of this. Maybe you guys can shed some light on the subject.

Well to get onto the grid at a European vintage race event like Goodwood, you can apparently use a replica that is built as an "accurate replica" and has parts that were sanctioned by the FIA for a Cobra back in the 1960s. In any case even if you had an "original" 1960's Cobra, you could only get on the track with say the weber manifold as specified to FIA originally, not some modern day aftermarket manifold. I think you will need the correct 289 hi-po engine block, not a modern aluminum 351 Windsor.

So thinking that you might get in a vintage racing event in Europe with a chevy engine, I would think that might be a figment of someone's imagination...

Of course if by racing in Europe, you mean getting into an open track event where you are not really competing in an FIA sanctioned race, perhaps that is what is meant???

I vote False for actual AC/SAI built cars.

1985 CCX 11-27-2016 05:01 PM

European rules are tough.
Very specific and to 60's standard.

Why do the Chevy guys always try to get s bow tie in these cars?
A stock Kirkham does not pass by itself guessing a 327 would not make it closer in tech.

"false" is my vote based on cars leaving the US I have seen getting prepped for Europe.

FFRCobra_427 11-27-2016 05:03 PM

Later in the article this might be the Why.
"All of which brings us to " "Shell Valley Cobra replica. It’s powered by a late-model Chevy LS3 engine, and fitted with a Magnuson blower. So while some Cobra purists might feel that’s a bit sacrilegious, there’s a historical precedent."

I don't think there is any historical precedent that's why I posted this question.

This is like saying that there were Ford Powered Cheetah's or Ford powered GrandSports........Hmmmmmmmm

I don't know the answer, nor do I really mind, but to answer your question here is one of my favourite artworks from a famed (but unknown) artist called Banksy.

Lately it seems so much a waste of energy to be concerned about what powers our kit/repli cars must be the senior thing. The lumps of iron or aluminum are all from the same source, the earth. I never understood the purists not accepting anything but the FE in our kit/repli cars when the more modern 385 series was so available.
Have to admit though for years was big into Chevrolet still always loved all monikers. It is after all what makes the big blue ball revolve.

I think we can agree that if someone wants to build a Cobra with an air cooled VW bug engine, we can say go for whatever makes you happy.

On the other hand if that same person tells everyone who will listen and gets an article published that Cobra racers started to pull their 289 engines and replace them with VW bug engines so that their cars could keep up with Herbie the Love Bug on the track, well, don't we call that a bunch of nonsense?

Yes. Why not just put a Camaro body on it?

legenmetals 11-28-2016 06:20 AM

I don't like the look of a new Camaro body and I had this spare claimer crate engine in the corner of the shop still in the shipping crate, so why not use it.The only OEM part on this build is the block.

peterpjb 11-28-2016 07:05 AM

the historic racing in europe is ruled as in every other country by the FIA-HTP (historical technical passport), that means for race cars, which were homologated in the past like the cobra 289, to be in the exact technical condition as homlogated in 1963, and additionally to prove most of the modern safety requirements,

thats all ;)

Bartruff1 11-28-2016 08:15 AM

It must be true, I read it on the internet...;)

I get all my news from Facebook.

HealeyRick 11-28-2016 10:42 AM

It could mean nothing more than when the original Ford motors wore out in the '60s or '70s the Europeans swapped in a motor that was more readily available at the time. Pretty common stuff. Of the fifty 100S Austin-Healey race cars, seven of them had an American V8 swapped in at some point, including this one that's coming to auction: https://news.classiccars.com/austin-...sdale-auction/

Yep, Coming up around the next corner, parked on the side of the road, broken down, in a sad sorry state while the fords go singing along, passing around the outside. :p
