I liked my avons on a tight drift / kart track. I found them pretty predictable. The buttons 555rII tires I had on my c5 Z06 vette were much worse in terms of letting go with an unpredictable snap.

I do regret not being able to track the decade old indy 500s at that kart track. The car would have drifter quite nicely with those. It didnt want to drift with the avons, they just grab and hold the line. You'd have to do something purposefully unwise like punch it hard to slide out the rear.

The cobra Valley suspension is also pretty forgiving in terms of not snapping out the rear. The stock spf setup with the Firestones was just scary.

How about this one, it looks to be my size, of the 295/50/15. I'm also looking into the 275/50/15.

That's an interesting looking tire. One of the reviews says they don't hook too well, fwiw. Wonder how soft the compound is. Also, I notice price wise they pushing up near the Avon strata.

FUNFER2 05-31-2020 06:56 PM

For me, great traction is not a concern as I'm not racing anymore. The price isn't too bad on $325 and way lower than AVON of $500.

CompClassics 06-01-2020 01:05 PM

Avons are a DOT approved radial racing tire manufactured for rally racing. Goodyear “Billboards” are a bias ply racing tire that are NOT DOT approved and should never be used on the street. That being said, I highly recommend the Avon tires for Cobra applications, they are correctly sized for Cobra applications.

Moto One 06-02-2020 07:46 PM

I wouldn't put anything other than Avons. They are sticker then you would think, just as the axel that undid it's CV. (yes we found that the axels where a little to short under full compression, it's fixed now.)

Mark.

Several years ago, I had a group buy on the Billboards from Roger Kraus, I wonder if we could again, if there's enough interest that is ?

6TNCRZY 06-03-2020 09:02 AM

I will be in the market for Avons very soon, let me know.

FUNFER2 06-03-2020 09:22 AM

I'd have to get others on board before contacting them.

rodneym 06-03-2020 11:11 AM

Curious...what savings were had last time?
Thanks

FUNFER2 06-03-2020 02:22 PM

It was $150 off.

rodneym 06-03-2020 04:15 PM

Not bad.

Awe, come on now.

FUNFER2 06-04-2020 09:38 AM

I have a couple that would be on board for a group buy on the AVONS.
I'll contact them when I get more people interested.

I've started a new thread on the group buy below.

What about Kumho's? I have them on my 03 SVT Cobra. Boy they hook well

6TNCRZY 06-14-2020 09:59 AM

One of you asked about the Hoosier Pro Street tires, I have them on my Model A highboy hot rod. They are a very good tire for something like that, but definitely not for something that is a sophisticated handling car, sizing for a Cobra might also be difficult. The correct tires make such a difference in the way a Cobra drives and handles, why would you put tires on you car that make it less enjoyable to drive? Let's get a few more people on the Avon group buy and all make our cars as good as they deserve to be!
