The unthinkable. Broke the windshield
After 13 years with this machine, I've broken a windshield. The windshield frame wasn't damaged but the glass is shattered in the middle of the windshield. So now what to do? The car is an early 92 Everette Morrison. This is a really great car but I'm worried about the owners of E-M actually getting back to me. So I'm looking for ideas on how to get this glass replaced. If I go to the Lexan or synthetic route, who do I talk to and how do I make sure the replacement will have the right curvature and dimensions as the broken windshield? Can it be duplicated from the broken glass? It's still in one piece and in the frame. I've taped it up so it'll stay together. Is it possible to duplicate the glass? I'm looking for any help I can get from all of you.
Figured something would happen as the car was on it's way to the chassis dyno after I put a new cam and lifters in it last fall. . Thanks everyone. Tim |

If the glass can be removed from the frame you can get a polycarbonate replacement I would assume. There are speciality shops that make them up with a special coating to resist scratches.

Check with Shell Valley I think their glass fits an E-M.

Thanks for the quick input. I'll look for the etching but I don't recall ever seeing it. Poly will work but not sure about the curvature. I'll look closer at that if I can't get a glass replacement. I'll call out to Nebraska in the next day or so. I'll also look at a friend's FF5 windshield that's cracked to see if it would fit.
I have to take the car in to the guy's with the chassis dyno tomorrow afternoon and work with them on fine tuning the timing and A/F ratio on Tuesday. Thanks again Tim |
Check with your DMV to make sure that you can replace the glass with lexan or some other poly windshield. Some sates only allow DOT rated glass.

Is it unreasonable to think all the cobra windshields interchange? They seem to look the same.

Try contacting E-M plant?
Tim,
You might try placing a call to the EM plant, in Baytown Texas. They sometimes get back to ya quickly... Good luck. |
To Patrickt's reply. Found a bug on the glass:
Viracon Tinted Safety Float AS1 M50 DOT 129 No help other than the maker of the glass itself. Went to thier website and they don't mention windshields other than their different types of laminated glass. Thanks anyway Tim |

I would ship the windshield to any Cobra manufacturer and they may have the needed windshield in stock. |

My windshield broke and when I called Shelby American they pointed me to the Shell Valley part. It was in fact made in England. Apparently they are the importer into the US.

Looks like Shell Valley is it. I've got the next 2 days off so I'll focus on getting this going. Spent part of yesterday doing dyno tuning and changing springs on the distributor. Will finish it up today I hope. Knock on wood, this engine is very stout. Kudos to Brent Lykins for helping me with the new cam grind and acting as my parts supplier. Good guy.
Thanks to all of you ! Tim |
Cobra Restorers have windshields in the online catalog for something 900.-USD.

Plastic (poly Carbonate) Windshield
I replaced my broken glass windshield with a poly unit from Cobra Valley. It is very clear, doesnt seem to chip (has sustained some scary impacts without marks let alone breaks)...A bit pricey.
They can custom cut them. Cobra Valley's PolyGlass Hi-Performance Optically Formed Windshields Did it myself with the help of a competent friend, not too bad: left the uprights in just removed the frame from the uprights... |
Update:
Spoke to Shell Valley and they said they are E-M's supplier for windshields. I ordered one yesterday. They will assemble it in a new frame today and ship it out to arrive by mid week next. They make their own frames out of Bronze and send them out to be chrome plated. They are made in Nebraska not England. Apparently the British frames are made for FF5. Robbin at Mid West said the policy I have with Infinity is $0 deductible for glass so this should be no cost. Probably could have just done the glass but the frame looked a little tweaked. I want the top to fit right so I went for the whole assembly with the claim adjuster's blessing. ~$860 delivered. The people at Shell Valley and Infinity have been great to deal with so far. Tom from E-M returned my call this morning as well but I'd already ordered the glass. Thanks for everyone's help. I'll let you all know the final outcome. Tim |
Just for info, HHR Cobra Spares sells glass Cobra windshields. The say that they're made to original Cobra spec. Here's one on eBay.

I've broken a number of screens on my Cobra over the years and I've always had them replaced by one of the main windscreen companies. All the Cobra screens are the same, and they are available off the shelf.
I took my frame out of the car and took it to the Autoglass depot and waited while they swapped the glass. It was all done on my insurance and all I paid was the £75 windscreen excess. You have a choice of clear or green or brown tint. Paul |
Great info here
