having to wait 90 seconds between posts is silly

Should be more like 20 seconds. Anybody know why it is so long?

Just had to wait another 13 seconds.

I can't type that fast that one minute between posts is a problem.

What I do find frustrating sometimes is a minute between searches :D

Cheers,
Glen

I am not sure if this is true but I tried to find out once and was told that it was to stop spammers that get onto a site just loading it up with their spam. And 90 seconds seems to be pretty standard among all of the sites that I belong to. As slow as I now type that really doesn't bother me.

Ron hit it on the head, the delay was done to prevent "bot" spammers from flooding this site with spam. While you don't see much of that here, out in the open, you'd be amazed at what happens in the background, day in and day out, hour by hour.

t walgamuth 11-16-2018 05:35 AM

Over at the Mercedes forum it used to be a minute. I complained and they lowered it to 20 or 30 seconds....about ten years ago. No problem noted.

I often run up against this 90 second limit....every day it seems. It is a big negative to sit here having nothing to do but play with myself while it ticks away.

Ron61 11-16-2018 06:37 AM

I have our site set at 30 seconds but we run it as a closed site and the spammers and bots can't get on unless they are accepted. A normal day for them trying used to be from 30 to 70 per day. This site is an open site and do you really want that many or more spam posts and crap all through the Forums. Just look in the Albums and you will find plenty of spam posts as some of the members haven't cleaned theirs out yet.

Its not a problem at the Mercedes forum. There are a ton of members there too.

twobjshelbys 11-16-2018 09:13 AM

The first thing the delay does is prevent double posts. Lots of times people write a post and then click the post button . The network and server here are less than robust and somtimes a post might take a minute. Then they get impatient and hit the button again (since there is no feedback that the post is in progress) and the result would be a double post if the timer weren't operating.

The other thing is it slows down the spammers.

Both are more or less relics of the days when servers were really slow. Same for the restrictions on search.

t walgamuth 11-16-2018 09:19 AM

How about we try it on a trial basis? If the problems are great it can be put back.

patrickt 11-16-2018 10:25 AM

I don't think we even have anyone here bright enough to post two quality posts within a minute and a half.

Frank Messina 11-16-2018 10:54 AM

Geez, it just took me 90 seconds to compose an answer to that one. Forget two

t walgamuth 11-16-2018 11:33 AM

Some people are more frugal with their words.;)

On one of this sites lower trafficked sister sites has a piece of software called "Spam-O-Matic (yes really), think it's been installed just a few years. The statistics to date read something like this:

79632 Spammers Denied Registration
273 Spammers Permanently Banned
341 Spammers submitted to Akismet
77362 Spammy Posts Automatically Moderated

I'll leave it at that

And allowing less time between posts will do what? These are things blocked by the software right?

Spammers still get through, and the moderator(s) have to deal with them. With the post above, I'm just showing you what happens behind the scenes so you can gain perspective as to why this site has the controls in place and the settings it has. These controls were not put in place from the beginning of time, but tweaked and modified as needed. In the case of the 90 seconds, this clearly works to keep the spammers in semi check. To complain about it, in hopes of making the owner of the site change it to your specific wants and needs, may not be in the best interest of the site as a whole. Again, just a different perspective than yours, thats all.

Ron61 11-17-2018 04:47 AM

Bill's post is much like what goes on behind the scenes on our smaller site. But because ours is smaller and there are two of us to check them we do it manually. I don't know about the Mercedes Site as I can afford one of them so never have been on that site. But just take a look at the left hand side of the Forum page here at New Members and a huge amount of them are spammers that I have deleted from our site. The same jerks use different names and try over and over.

Jamo is the lone Moderator here and that is why any spam posts should be reported to him immediately as he doesn't have time to go through the piles of them each day to see who they are and where they are from.

No. You should concentrate on installing a classy third brake light or inserting your dog in to various Cobra maintenance pics.

t walgamuth 11-17-2018 07:39 AM

hah hah!

I am thinking on the third light subject. I plan to mount turn signal lights too on my roll bar.

Even the Studebaker forum is a lot quicker than here and talk about a bunch of grouchy old men!
