Cost Expectation For Full Repaint Job
What $$ cost expectation should I have for an onyx black with white stripes repaint job?
I understand that black is more fussy. It is not a color change. No visible fiberglass body damage. currently nothing wrong outside the usual hip rock chips and some clearcoat scratches. Thank you for any insight in advance. |
Kind of a hard question to answer as there are so many variables and different levels of paint shops. Materials have gotten pretty expensive and I'm hearing $3000 is pretty typical for the paint supplies on a better quality paint job. Around here the guys with cars in paint jail right now are paying between $50 - $75/hr for labor - which is probably cheap since I'm in Arkansas. You can probably save some labor by stripping the car down yourself and maybe even doing some preliminary prep and sanding - although it's something you need to have a good idea of how to do.
At one end you have someone like MACCO at probably $1,500 (not sure that will get stripes however) and at the other end you will have a custom paint shop at around $10 - 15,000 would be my guess on a body with no damage to be fixed. I have an old Corvette and it's not real rare to hear of $20,000 paint jobs and quotes on their forum. |
Where are you located? That makes a lot of differences in price.

That is a pretty general question. Will you be removing everything, i.e. headlights, taillights, wind shield, dash, roll-bar, and so on? If you are just taking into real good shop, giving them paint codes, and walking out........ probably $5k+.

I think we've had a recent discussion on this topic. I was quoted 20K for a repaint on mine.

It takes five hours to remove all the stuff and 10 to 15 hrs to put in back on after paint.

Oh I forgot about cleaning all the paint shop dust, dirt, grim off the car. That takes about 40 hours.

I had mine done last year, NOS in gel-coat, to a finished paint job, 4-coats base, 3-coats clear, I put my lights, handles, pipes, etc. back on. Dark Green (Zagato Dark solid color), no stripes, at a well known custom paint shop, (They only do completes) I spent a year looking for just the right shop, that I felt comfortable with. When I say complete, it was, finished under hood, trunk, door jabs. When I walked out of there wasn't much left from 18K. Over 6k just in materials. Again like some had said, your area, will make a big difference. Now granted it's pretty close to a show paint job, but I thought I'm only doing this once. Hopes this help's, Cheers Tom.

Expectations
1 go to car shows and talk to people 2 go to paint supply houses and talk to people 3 look at cars painted by people that are going to be painting your car. Do these things and you should expect to get a fair price on your paint job.

I talked to few others around here in the paint biz. Neighborhood of $20K for a "Tier 1" do everything job seems to be the number that keeps coming up. |

Good luck with with the bucket of assorted hardware he gifted you. I've been on the reassemble end of many a rip and tear mech's work and had to un-screw it. |

We won't paint over existing paint, we strip all paint. Painting over original paint may cause paint lifting. Materials today will cost $3500.00.
Average paint job turn key is 25-30K @ SO/Cal PaintWorks. |

One of the gals in our group had her Cobra repainted a few years back by a shop in Atlanta, Ga.
They media blasted two bad paint jobs off for $3,000. New show quality paint job was $9,000. Same guy did a GT 40 for $12,000 |
