Chris,

A lot of people just don't drive their cobras much and some of us live in areas where weather limits our driving time. I have just over 10K miles in mine but the last year with the fires and bad Winter I can't get them out very often. Right now we are going through a 10 straight day of rain and bad weather and it is past the middle of May.

In MN for a Cobra you realistically have 5-1/2 months where temps are suitable.
Now start taking away days for rain which ALWAYS occur on the %$*# weekend.
However, when the weather is perfect here, driving a Cobra is soul inspiring.

I bought mine second-hand with 9,000 miles on it, and am on the verge of turning 30,000 miles.

I drive my SPF Cobra every chance I get. After all, what was the point of buying it if not to drive it...?

I've had mine a year and a half but with all the sorting needed it has not been roadworthy much. Less than 4,000 on the car. I have it running and driving well now. I took it to an autocross yesterday and got in 9 runs on the course.

Great fun!

I have well over 30,00 miles on my FFR. Ralph Button is well over 300,000 miles.

Just short of 50,000. Over the past few years we haven't put many miles due to all the things we have going on.

Hi Chris,

My Cobra (289FIA) is still under construction so is yet to leave my garage.
Not a Cobra, but my old Alfa has close to 250000km (around 160000 miles) on the odometer and is still massively enjoyable every time I drive it.

Don't apologise for your English....it is way better than my German

Cheers,
Glen

11,000+ trouble free miles on my Unique. Just changed the trans (toploader) and rear end (Jag rear) gear oil last week. I bought it to drive it and I drive it every chance I get.

55,000 miles on SPF1855 from August of 2004 to the fall of 2011.
Then about 10k on SPF2584 from summer of 2012 to the fall of 2014.
Sun, rain, snow, sleet & hail. 104F degrees to 4 F. I must be a mailman.
Drive it! Why save it for the next guy?
Jim

That' some good miles there and well done. Much more fun to drive than sitting silently.

I have a 1985 built Contemporary with 67000 miles. Just came off of a complete frame off and looks like a kid again.. Why own it if you don't drive it?

Neikon,

A little oil is probably more normal than many want to admit. Even a new motor, built with looser tolerances than the new varieties, will burn some oil.

The decision to rebuild is up to you but why if there's no immediate need.

That said I did engine work on my aluminum 427 Windsor a few times in 65,000 miles.

Replaced main & rod bearings looking for better oil pressure. Tightened the clearances a bit, it helped a little.

Rebuilt after an exhaust valve let loose and broke off. New piston, new rings, new heads. A complete rebuild.

Rebuilt after the car was crashed (not me driving) and engine & oil system were compromised.

Enjoy your driving, sounds like a great car.

Jim

If you build the engine right in the beginning and take reasonable care of it, it should easily last 100K miles. Some stroker engines - especially older ones - do tend to burn a bit of oil because of the piston design. If your 427 is built on a stock block, then then it's probably the nature of the build. Rebuilding it probably won't change anything.

I drive my car about 5-6K miles a year. Give or take.
