Mustang I concept car

SOMEONE HAS TO DO THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

https://www.rcnmag.com/fresh-finds/f...berglass-molds

I'm thinking a group buy/body build.

Widen the body maybe 6 inches. Put some flares on the wheel openings

Custom build your own chassis.

Maybe an 300 + hp Focus RS drivetrain

Cool.

Cheers
Greg

Ford Fiero?

I'd bet Ryan would go halvsies.

I tried to force my mind to like it, but I just couldn't make it happen. Too much Corvette DNA in it for me. Even though I love the Corvettes of those years. I just do not want the Mustang to look like one.

Kinda why I never liked the new Camaro. It's a fine looking car if they had named it something else, or at least not advertised it to be inspired by the late 1960's Camaro. While at the same time Ford had nailed the 1969 Mustang and Dodge had nailed the 1970 Challenger, Chevy landed a turd in a punch bowl, with the new Camaro, as far as I was concerned.

How did I get so old and opinionated (picky, crabby, or what ever it is)?

Greg,

Thank you for stepping up to the plate and volunteering your time and money to make this venture happen. Can't wait to see the first one roll out of your garage. ;)

It is still a nice looking car! The point on the nose is too high though for stable aero above 80 mph.....if it would go that fast!;)

I have the correct original V4 drive train and nearly all literature on this car including the original press kit. I contacted the seller and he seems to be holding out for a big payday. If anyone buys it I am interested in buying a body if the price is right.

I'll make those bodys for you guys for $6K, + the cost of the mold, $17K , $23k for the first one, buy 2 ,the price goes down, $6K for the body + 1/2 the price of the mold, $8.5K, so, $14.5K each, buy more bodys, price goes down, same way. So there you have it, actual numbers of what it's going to cost.

my427cobra 06-05-2019 07:27 AM

Well Mr Mustang. I wish I had the room to be a one man show, but unfortunately I do not.

Mr Bruce has it well laid out. 10 buyers would get the price down to a reasonable point, although I agree that the mold price does seem quite high and some of the pieces don't appear to be there.

Always fun to consider it though.

Cheers

I had forgotten how unattractive that car was. The nose looked like it was done by a refugee from a boat yard and positioned high enough to keep the boat's nose up in the air as it went through the water. The sides and back of the car are uninspiring at best and the power plant / drivetrain positioning suggests a diminished future even as a proletariat grocery getter.

It was definitely (and mercifully) a significant step away from what was actually offered to the public for sale. Can you imagine the field day Chevy's Camaro marketing guys would have had competing for market share with that car ...

Beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder.

Yup, the front end needs some imaginative re-engineering. Yes too high, but a re-engineered chassis/front suspension and modern, lower profile tires would go a long way to lowering the front end.

And I like the styling of the rear. Tail lights and air extractor grills were probably custom but look vaguely familiar.

The mold offered for sale is (unless other mold pieces are available but not shown) missing a lot of pieces:
- seat tubs
- floor
- belly pan
- instrument cluster
- inner fender wells front and rear
- front "trunk" pan
- rear "trunk" pan
and of course the plexi windshield molds.

More work than's worth it. Maybe?

Cheers

At a glance, it reminds me of a Porsche 914 with smoother, more compact design.

Though at first glance, it is "cuter" then the 65 Mustang, it was just not that practical nor functional. I would not like to think of a front end collision with the fuel tank right in front. A front lower air dam would be needed to keep it from lifting at speed. And the "roll bar" will need to be raised.

I would also lengthen the wheelbase to make room for at least a v6 if not a v8 behind the cockpit.

I would guess that the whole rear end would need to be "vented" to allow hot air to pass thru the engine compartment.

Plus something other in design to meet requirements for a proper windscreen to be street legal. A tube chassis could work for the body to hang on. A Porsche 901 or 915 transaxle would be the least expensive way to go for the rear drive. Or you could adapt a Corvette transaxle to do the job.

Other choice would be to use a whole front wheel drive motor and trans located transversely. This would help keep the wheel base shorter.

How about an EcoBoost V6 from a Taurus or Ford police car? 365 HP in a relatively compact package, all bolted to a subframe - though too wide for a Mustang I unless the body was widened.

isn't that speed racer?

This was a 1969 AMX-2 Concept car from basically the same period and AMC went out of business. Maybe if they had built it, their fate may have played out differently ...

When this first came out, my Father and I were very excited about the motor, as we both drove & raced Saab's with this V-4 (More hop-up parts) on the way. But sadly it never happened. We may have even brought one. Ed, I really hoped they made that AMX-2 also, what great lines, and the car's nice too :)
