The riders or the spectators? %/

The riders have a chance.

Good points, Tom and Gary.

I'll add to that....with a question.
Preface: I am familiar - quite literally - with every last nut and bolt on my car, and of course every bill. I have hundreds of hours (actually, much more) invested in its build; I’ve had endless skinned knuckles, sore back, sore knees, yada, yada .... so how many drivers of cars in these videos built their own cars….and then drive in such a stupid manner?

If I sound old, OK, I'll wear that

Cheers!
Glen

Glen, I would venture to say not many (in this video), most are more then likely the second owner. I would say the first owner that (ALSO) put their (Blood, Sweat, & Tears) into their Babies, sold them "Hoping" they go to the next owner that would treat them like they have done, only to have this happen to their cars. Only in this day & age can you "BUY CLASS" :) Something is just wrong with that picture. Again that's only my $.03 Cheers Glen ,TommyRot. P.S. Glen, just had to add this. This reminds me of a saying a wise old gentleman (Ex-Racer) once said. "Your Ego sent you checks your TALENT can't cash" Kinda say's it all huh ;)

Spectator safety like the fifties! Rider too. Much too dangerous for me, now and back when. Spectacular though!

There IS a difference between a tail-happy car driven by an inexperienced driver and a tail-happy car driven by someone who knows what he's doing.

This footage of a MkI Jag at Goodwood is interesting :D

That driver had total confidence in his driving skill.

Wow, hope you had a good bell housing. That's how people loose feet.

Yes - that would ruin my day (week, month) for a brief moment of euphoria!

Nice piece of mechanical carnage by the way. There is a certain admiration for such examples.

RB60 11-11-2020 01:07 AM

I couldn't download the best pics of the carnage. It literally destroyed the pressure plate, it was all twisted up and snapped the bolts off clean. The inside of blow proof bell looked like someone went nuts with a cut-off wheel, it's wasted. It broke the nose off the starter, there were pieces of twisted springs hanging out the clutch fork hole. It bent the crank.
The motor is at the shop now, they're going over the block now, but I believe it's still good. I'm gonna rebuild it.
But yeah, I though the world was coming to an end for a few seconds and saw dust and small pieces of metal bouncing in the rear view mirror.
Don't do this sh!t at home.

xb-60 11-11-2020 04:41 AM

Did I miss something? What were you doing to initiate that amount of damage??
"It bent the crank" :JEKYLHYDE

Cheers!
Glen

Sort of brings the theory that - these light cars are so traction limited that they can't do much driveline damage - into doubt. Glad the flywheel stayed solid as that could have spread the damage much further.

RB60 11-11-2020 07:18 AM

I was just about to shift into 3rd at about 5300 to 5400 rpm and...OUCH!!:(

Alfa02 11-11-2020 11:41 AM

That's what 427 Side Oiler's can do. That's scary stuff  Glad you had a scatter shield, one of the first thing I added to the 427. Mine is a Holman & Moody block (Date Coded 1965), with a LeMans Crank, and Rods. My engine builder say's good to 7000, now I'm not so sure %/ We can fix broken, easier than heal. Glad no one was hurt RB60, Cheers TommyRot.

After a quick glance at the block and running the numbers (for some reason I was told it was a side oiler?), it's been determined to be a '62 1/2 406 block (don't ask me why I never looked when it was up on a lift before, and I never asked my mechanic ). From what little info I got with the car, it said the rev limiter was set at 5500 and could be set to 6500 after 1000 miles. The previous owner said he never increased it, neither did I.
Anyway, I am pretty confident the block is still good, so we will go from there.
Yes, I am all but sure I would not have survived if it weren't for the blow-proof bell, it probably would have cut my leg(s) off and I'd have lost control, it blew next to a drainage ditch and a 5 foot embankment. A brand new approved steel bell awaits, along with new alum. flywheel and HD clutch.
Oh well, such is the ownership of a replica of one of the most iconic cars in automotive history. Ya just gotta love it...and we sure do!! :)
