ERA Outer Tie Rods

Wanting to replace outer tie rod ends on ERA 757 and their book calls out Moog ES425RL. Only problem , Moog says that part isn`t available anymore , NAPA doesn`t have a crossover and the TRW part isn`t available anymore .
I`ll be calling ERA tomorrow , just trying to jump start things here .
The one replacement isn`t a heavy duty one according to Moog , who makes it for the big box retailers .

So , what are you ERA guys using currently ?

strictlypersonl 09-24-2020 06:09 AM

They're getting hard to find. I found a couple of places that still list the Moog ES425R. I'm also going to check out an off-brand that I found.
I may have to change the upright to accommodate something more contemporary, but that gets complicated.

I'm in Canada and crossed your part number over to a Napa part number. The Napa number is NCP 2692301

Sorry, I don't know if that part number will work in the USA, good luck.

DanEC 09-24-2020 07:02 AM

It pulls up at my local store (Arkansas).

Bob - sounds like it might be a good idea to buy a couple of these and squirrel away in spare parts?

Bobcat 09-24-2020 07:17 AM

You`re both correct on the NAPA number .....local guy found the number , problem is no warehouses in his area have the tie rod end . I did find a TRW 425R at Rock Auto , and according to Moog , that was made by them and is a good number . Two are on the way to me now .
Talked to ERA this morning and they`re aware of the issue and are looking at some alternatives .
So , yes , plan to have some backup stock here .
Thanks for the help .

I just checked Rockauto and there was a TRW ES425R tie rod end and it was on closeout for around $8.25. I obviously ordered a pair for that price. Hopefully the ES isn't something different but for $26 to the door it seemed like a low stakes gamble.

Me too.

DanEC 09-24-2020 03:24 PM

Question - all these part numbers have an "L" or "R" in them. I assume this stands for right and left hand threads???? Which do we need? If the ERA #Moog ES425RL is a left hand thread tie rod then this TRW with an "R" in it may not work.

Hopefully I'm wrong as I have a couple in my basket at Rockauto but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

strictlypersonl 09-25-2020 04:42 AM

Both sides on the ERA are right-hand threads.

DanEC 09-25-2020 04:52 AM

Thanks Bob. I’m going to go ahead and get a couple of spares just in case.

Bobcat 09-25-2020 07:23 AM

Looks like Rock Auto may owe me a commission on moving their old stock
Mine should be here early next week . Still trying to find the vibration in the front end and hope the tie rod ends are it , but I doubt it . Probably in the tires , but they were rechecked and I was told they were ok . Taking them to a different place this time .

DanEC 09-25-2020 01:08 PM

Yeah - I got the last one. Found another on Ebay that was actually a bit less overall since they provided free shipping. Probably would have gotten a break on shipping if Rockauto still had a pair but came out OK in the end.

But you did good - I would hit them up for that commission.

Hi Bob,

For those of us who aren't hoarding toilet paper and Moog tie rods (sorry Dan, couldn't resist), please let us know what you come up with.

Thanks,
Kevin

This NAPA number worked for me: NCP 2692301
Only issue is that they were $32 each vs. $15 shipped from Rock Auto.

If you actually NEEDED a pair, the $64 wouldn't be that big of a deal.

Aren't these just outer tie rods for a '77 Chevy Vega? You can still get those AC Delco parts and three or four other manufacturers as well. I don't think you need to hoard them.

DanEC 09-26-2020 04:32 AM

I’m kind of an amatuer horder. I have some friends who are serious horders. It’s an affliction.

Just what I need, a horde of armatures on the border. I hate auto-correction.:(

DanEC 09-26-2020 06:13 AM

Just saw that. Unfortunately it may have been caffeine insufficiency as much as auto spell check.

Haven't all the '77 Chevy Vegas gone to their graves by now? And if so who needs parts for them anymore? ;)

Apparently a couple of manufacturers, including AC Delco. And if you check Rock Auto, they also have other manufacturers, including one last Moog tie rod and some by Mevotech and Delphi.
