ERA FIA Exhaust Options
Hello All, I have an ERA 289 FIA with the 3" OD side pipes. It's way too loud right now with just an insulated insert inside the 3" pipe. I am wondering what others have done on this car for exhaust options. I think it would be hard to put anything larger than a 3"OD under the car without it being too low or rubbing the designed saddles where the exhaust runs near the out riggers. All or most of the glasspack and chambered tubes are 3.5" OD or larger. I did see that magnaflow makes a same side offset in/out muffler that may work. I would prefer to stay period correct looking but would look at any options. Whatever I decide I will definetely still have the exit in front of the rear tires.. Any Advice? Any pics of what you all have done?
Thanks, Mike |
I'm all ears, Mike. My exhaust is yet to be done (engine not yet fitted). Clearance is a challenge for me too, but I'll be having an undercar exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheels.

Hey Glenn, by the lack of replies to my post we may be the guinea pigs on this project..

I have 3" OD exhaust pipes on the 289 FIA race car. I use a straight through muffler, I believe that it is a dynamax, that is about 3.5" OD. They do scrape a little when I am going over the curbing and they would hangup a little trying to be the car on a beaver tail open trailer. I have the transverse leaf springs and have installed a 1" lowering block on the front and 1.5" lowering block on the rear. Before I added the lowering blocks, unless I went over high curbing, there were no issues with contacting the race track surface.
Normally, people do not use mufflers on race cars, but I kind of like my hearing. Even with them, it is loud with the pipes exiting just in front of the rear wheels. Jim |
Here are photos of my 3" undercar exhaust. The mufflers are low restriction from SpinTech that they made to fit the area I had available - don't know if they still do that or not...
The upcharge for the mufflers was quite reasonable. Of course, that was nearly 20 years ago! It's fairly loud even with the big mufflers. I had to reduce the width from the first set as I didn't quite allow enough space between the mufflers and the outriggers and chassis. The engine moves a bit more than I allowed for at first. Second set is still on the car. No problems with ground clearance so far. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...13ExhPass2.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...hassisLeft.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...ound_Cobra.jpg The last shot shows the car from the outside so you can see where the exhaust ended up. |
I put the Classic Chambered Powersticks on mine. They have no packing and
no baffles so there is nothing to burn up, rattle or blow out. They are dimpled which is not "stock" but you hardly notice it. They take up very little space and I have a bit more clearance than I did with the stock ERA reverse flow mufflers. They aren't too loud but you definitely won't be sneaking up on anyone! |
Mike,
This may not be what you are looking for ... I went with what ERA calls out for their under car exhaust, but had it turn out before the rear tire. Not as efficient as a straight through setup, but it works well and looks pretty good to my eye. Not too loud but not to quiet either, just the right amount for me. An exhaust system is pretty much a balance between power, clearance and sound. At the bottom of page 22 and top of page 23 of my build log is the setup: http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/era-...ld-log-22.html |
Thanks TKB, what you have done is along the same lines as what I was thinking about doing. Looks great!
|
Mike,
Sounds great, please let us know how it goes. |
Honestly, our original FIA cars really didn't have sidepipes like now.
