If you don't have it, these gems are impressively difficult to release to remove the steering wheel.

The release procedure is to place your thumb in the thumb rest, depress the release lock button (180˚ opposite) with your second index finger and twist counter clockwise a quarter turn. Then you can lift the wheel off.

Without the thumb grip you need impressively strong fingers to release the steering wheel.

The guys who offer the versions with the thumb grip add the princely sum of $10 to the selling price. :(

p.s. If you decide to go this way let me know and I will send you an XL speed sheet to help position any new fastener holes you need to create. If you give the spreadsheet the bolt circle diameter and the number of holes it will give you X/Y coordinates for each hole so you are dead on target. There is also an offset function, if you want to get fancy, that will allow you to offset all holes by what ever amount you need for proper alignment.

I like the thumb grip on the one you found but the guy got back to me and he doesn't have black and won't for the forseeable future. I'll see what the cheapie looks and performs like, if it's not up to par then I'll report back here for guys who search down the road with the same question, and I'll just spring for the NRG real deal hub.

I like both options shown in this thread.

The way Morris did it looks very similar to the ERA modification.

I have been considering the removable wheel to slow down a car thief. $850 is pretty salty from ERA. I will think about this.

Morris - what is the Sweet part number you used? Do you cut the steering column shaft and then weld the Sweet male piece to it (the part that stays in the car)? On the part that removes, is it all bolted together or is it welded?

I just ordered the splined 3/4” shaft and welded it on the steering shaft at the height I wanted it......the took the barrel and machined out the O.D. For the Sweet Quick release and the thickness so we could stick the Sweet inside the barrel with 2 cut outs to grab the Sweet rim to release it...then we just drill holes in the barrel to match the Sweet release....and the Barrel all ready had the steering wheel mounting bolt holes....

Rothsport makes one of the best steering wheel quick release I have found.

The Rothsport steering wheel hub is very close to the Porsche unit.
The taper removes the slop that splined hubs have and also make it very easy and quick to put on with the correct clocking. IMHO this style quick release is vastly superior to the splined style.

Its only a $400 upgrade to get the removable steering wheel, as you don’t need the standard column. Right?

It's currently a $450 add.

I didn’t get one with my car, but added it later. I recommend it not only for anti theft, but it makes it easy if you have have to get under the dash to do anything.

I changed my order also and love the quick disconnect steering wheel. It makes getting in car and working under the dash much easier. Go with it…. You won’t regret it.

It came in today. I now have to have the existing hub machined to accept it. Shouldn't be a big deal. Hope to pick up the car next week or the week after.
