Unique or ERA 427 Cobra build

Ok finally going to buy a Cobra .. rolling chassis or possibly more work done by manufacturer .. it has been 33 years since I first was looking at them ..Contemporary, ERA, Unique. Planning a roadster with an original 427 side oiler block(already sourced) TFS heads, Webers, exhaust rear exit. C6 auto trans(only 4 - 427 made with the C6). Paint I was thinking Mink silver, sapphire blue or Lincoln charcoal frost, black leather interior. So right now it is between ERA .. Unique. Everything considered what would resale be like on a Unique 427 Cobra as described ? Will C6 help or hurt resale value ? Any and all opinions appreciated on color selection too

Automatic cuts your resale enhanced buyers pool by 90%, other than that, both companies are top notch, you could not go wrong with either one.

Ok then .. the Tremec TKX or Toploader ? Any opinions on color for resale value ?

I would go with a Toploader (actually, I did ;)) but either choice would have much wider resale appeal for the car than an auto box in a Cobra replica.

If you went the Toploader route, give some thought as to which differential ratio you would choose.

Cheers!
Glen

I was going to say the Tremec but I found the Roush 427IR was happiest running at higher RPMs so in fact I rarely used 5th and even didn't use 4th in city driving. So I'd say either one

Colors - standard colors are the easiest. I've seen a lot of cars on Bring a Trailer and the first thing I think of is "I'd budget 20K for a repaint" into the price... Even my British Racing Green car had comments like that and when it finally sold and went to Japan I was told it was repainted Guardsman Blue.

I've been lucky enough to have had one of each. I loved them both. Have to agree with Mrmustang......no wrong choice between these two. Both are great people to work with as well.

I have Unique with a 427 sideoiler and a close ratio Toploader four speed running 355 gears. If I had to do it again I would get a wide ratio four speed the close ratio has too tall a first gear in my opinion.
If you do get a Cobra I think you’re gonna simply love it no matter which you choose.
Good Luck

Can't go wrong!

Interestingly, Unique told me to buy ERA if I didn't buy theirs... I think they both have great respect for each other. I bought Unique's and have never looked back. Either way, you'll be happy. Both are wonderful cars.

The annual Homecoming, which we just had, is a game changer! When you buy Unique, you become part of the family. Wish you could have been in attendance. It was fabulous!

I think the Unique body is more pleasing to look at - my personal preference - but that will be in the eyes of the beholder, as they say.

Do yourself a favor and go to Gadsden for a visit. They have done some custom work for me, and it was reasonably priced. I am getting the details on the car I want to have. Alan Weaver is a great painter, so you can get that done, right in house.

Wait, What?? You have been waiting 33years for a Cobra, and you're already talking resale value?? Nevertheless, both companies make great Cobras, I will have an ERA 289FIA as my last Cobra. I have to agree about an automatic, and I had one in a JCF 289 MK.2 with a C-4, the (only) time I enjoyed it, a bunch of us Cobras were stuck in traffic, me using just my left foot for braking, right foot gas, everybody else is wearing out their left leg for the clutch in & out ;) Paint : I've had BRG, Red, and now Silver, BRG look's so right our cars. Just my $.03 Cheers & Welcome.

This is neither here nor there, but it's amazing how many automatic Cobra's old Carroll owned through the years. Super Cobra, a 428, I believe a 289 MKII, and I know his very last was a Superformance MKII. Then again, who was going to call Carroll a sissy? By the way, I have heard from more then one driver, a 428 station wagon engine, with a C6, is a joy to drive! Cheers, Dennis

Similar to a motorcycle, the Cobra driving experience provides that heightened
physical connection you have with the car. An automatic kind of pours cold
water on the whole sensation.

If you are concerned about investment protection, odd colors and an automatic
transmission will crater its resale value.

MGP69stang 05-27-2022 07:12 AM

I'm 6'4" size 13 shoe so I thought going C6 would give me more room in footwell but understand comments against an automatic.
So the top Cobra colors are what ?..
On a Roadster ..Lincoln Mink silver A-1784 , Lincoln charcoal frost A-1786 or Indigo blue and silver stripes on a side pipe roll bar model ?

That's exactly my height and shoe size... and my ERA was tweaked so it fits me like a glove. I'm even on the ERA web site.

And real men paint their Cobra beige.

Your car, your money, your personal tastes.

For you to even ask about resale means you are viewing this as an investment, and not a toy. Bad choice for an investment, great choice as a toy.

As for your physical size, ERA is your top choice over the Unique at that point, as they can easily tweak the car to fit your inseam.

Mucho correcto.

Ok ..I'm thinking more of when I eventually pass that my family can sell the Cobra quickly .. not as an investment

No, you should leave instructions to be buried in it. Unless it was the Cobra that put you in the grave to begin with....;)

MGP69stang 05-27-2022 08:41 AM

LOL Good idea though

Incorrect. Unique can and has fitted drivers up to 7 feet tall. A well known former member here - Bob Evans, if I remember correctly - was famous testimony to that with his Unique FIA. Even my older Unique had been factory modified with a right hand drive conversion, dropped floors and an extended passenger side (now driver side) footbox.
Other than that minor point, I agree with pretty much everything else said about both cars and the transmission choice.

Rosco 05-27-2022 12:09 PM

I have a Unique and only regret was not going with a 5-speed as I went for the period correct top loader and 3.54 gears. I will be putting a 5-speed in I hope shortly so highway travel not a problem!

Best of Luck and enjoy the process as its memorable and fun!

BTW - Both great cars!
