Default S&H air cleaner foam filter

So, I want to buy replacement foam for my S&H air cleaners. The foam being used is way too restrictive. The garage thought they were doing me a favor. The Stelling and Helling air cleaner are basically stamped chrome top and bottom and two rings of chromed perforated flat material bent and welded forming separate inner and outer rings , with a ring of foam filter material between the rings. The foam does get burnt in backfires and such. There is such a difference between running with the air cleaners on and off. So for now I want to get some light foam or replacement until I can get other changes going on. Any body been down this hole and can offer some advise or guidance?

UNI Filters sells their various grade pore filter foam in sheets. https://unifilter.com/online-catalog/accessories/
Available thru Amazon etc...
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=uni+filte...86&ref=sr_pg_2

They do make a 8.5" X 3.25" assembly that might work for you if you split it in half. Your other post stated you were pretty limited on hood clearance. https://unifilter.com/online-catalog...otive-filters/

You may find a useful post I did on the S&H filters and alternatives here:

There are replacement filters in different heights available - you just need to establish your hood clearance. I run K&N filters in mine but they are only something like 1/4” taller due to clearance with my smooth hood.

I have a Dove Tunnel Wedge intake manifold with dual four barrel carbs. the air cleaners are actually under the regular hood. The cut out in the hood is back far enough from the opening of the scoop to protect the distributor from the rain and spill on top of the first S&H air cleaner. The S&H air cleaners are maybe 1 1/2' tall, and they have been trimmed so that with the welds between the two air cleaners, the outer edges are slightly lower, absolutely against underside of the hood. I always thought the air cleaners were a limiting factor. The year before last I had some work done and the garage thought they were doing me a favor and replaced the foam filter material with new foam that is more dense. The S&H air cleaners as they sit now are a great limitation. I can feel the difference without the air cleaners. The spark plugs are usually fouled. The side pipes are black. I intend to make some changes this winter, nut for now I have some gas to burn. For now, I need new foam, that will let more air in. The original foam was flat material bent to form a circle and glued or fused at the ends. I'd like to just buy some replacement S&H foam element and trim the height to fit my

Thanks, interesting stuff. May need to swap out my S&H for some K&Ns!

The foam filter material in my 8 1/2" S&H air cleaners looked like the original green but still seems restrictive. My filters are only 1 1/2" tall at the highest and taper down to 1 3/8". The foam filter was made of 5/8 thick foam sheet, probably 16 wide, and then was cut in 1 1/2" wide strips and were then glued 16" and a 8" end to end to form a circle. Each foam filter element is 5/8"thick x 1 1/2 tall" x 24"long). Looks OK but I swear there seems to be a marked difference in engine response with and without the air cleaners mounted.

These have K&N inside. There is still some restriction with the trim ring on. I only run the outer ring btw.

Local fabric store here is JoAnn's fabrics. The store only has high density foam in store. Anything different would need to be ordered. I went with the "UNI" suggestion and ordered the BF-1 option, light green sheet of air filter material 5/8"x 12" x 16" , and enough to make over two elements. I'll cut three 1 1/2" high by 16" strips. One strip I'll cut into half to make two 8" x 16" pieces, and then joining the 8" pieces to the 16" pieces making two filter element circles 5/8" x 1 1/2" x 24". It will be from material that was intended to be engine air filter material.
I think the high-density foam being used, was too restrictive, causing the spark plugs to carbon foul faster thar usual. I still need to create another hood with a raised area for better air cleaner clearance.

I have a triangle one..can't remember the name, but my motor sucked the foam right through at high rpm. I now have some stretch Nomex on the outside, merely to keep the bigger stuff out. My hood scoop also feeds the top of the carb directly.

The E-2570 is 8.1 inches X 2 inch this one should fit inside the SH.

Just measure what you have to make sure the dia will fit and for the height.
