Default Question about CSX 4150

I have a continuation Cobra in my shop for some maintenance. The fuel cell is leaking. Any chance the bladder is still available? has anyone replaced one before?
Thanks Mike

Do you have the standard 15 gallon tank, or the 42 gallon tank?

Kirkham for the 42 gallon tank parts.

The 15 gallon tank, uncertain

Mike,

Your best bet would be to check with Shelby. If anyone would have it, it is them — they built the car.

If it is an aftermarket fuel cell, the manufacturer's name should appear somewhere on the fuel cell. The same approach, contact them to see if they still provide that particular bladder, possibly a replacement bladder or a complete replacement fuel cell as a service item.

If the two different searches do not turn up any actionable solutions, your next best bet, if the customer wants to keep the fuel cell, is a commercially available alternative that can be made to fit in the available space.

If all else fails, the final fallback would be to replace the damaged fuel cell with a properly baffled fuel tank. To properly baffle a fuel tank will require some effort. Without the baffling at some point below full, the gas will uncover the in-tank pickup during turns, rapid acceleration or braking and cause a fuel starvation problem for the engine.

Your customer's whoops is not a particularly complex technical problem but it is an aggravating nuisance problem, especially to reslove.

I changed mine to baffled aluminum tank. (Craig Combes)
That way no issues in 7-8 years....
Mine was 8 years old when it failed...

This is the best long term advice. Or you'll be back here again.

Contact Cobrakiwi on here, Craig C. He will be able to take care of what ever your needs are. Really good guy to deal with. He has done work for me on my CSX4000 car. I replaced my bladder tank with an original aluminum gas tank. If you have trouble getting a hold of him, just PM me, and I can send you his phone number. Good luck!

The 23 gallon fuel cell for my late 4000 series was made by Fuel Safe. I called them with the specifics from the tag on the Fuel Cell and they were able to give me a quote to replace the bladder. I shipped them the complete unit - aluminum containment and bladder - and they sent it back with the new bladder installed. This was in 2020 in the middle of Covid so the turn around wasn't great (about 6 weeks0 but they still got it done.

The original bladder in my 82 Butler let loose back in 99 when I added an octane booster. Gave dimensions to Fuel Safe and had a new one in a couple of weeks. PITA, but they're designed to be replaced every few years (not 17 years) like racing belts (which nobody does either).

Another vote for Craig Coombe/CobraKiwi. A few years back, my CSX 4145 had its original (?) Fuel Safe bladder start to fail, and Craig fabricated me a new baffled tank that looks like the original, and now I never have to worry about it again. Excellent craftsmanship, fair prices, and a great guy to work with. I also had him fabricate some other original-style components to make my Cobra more “correct”.

Thanks guys. Fuel safe wants $4000.00 to replace the bladder. Yes $4000.00 not including me shipping the old one from MA to CA
I found a local tank builder who is going to fabricate a new tank based on the removed fuel cell.
Mike

Smart move, Mike. That is the short way home.
