Air cleaner for 427 with dual fours
I currently have two trimmed down S&H air cleaner that show me they are inadequate to supply enough air. There is such an improved difference in performance with out the air cleaners Any more the spark plugs are all black from running with the restrictive air filters and the new foam material. But that is what the car came with and there is no room for any higher filter under hood.
I'm going to change to another inline dual four air cleaner. Since it will need to come higher through the hood, let go for it. What have you seen that a non machinist could buy or put together, suggestions? Inilne dual four the carb spacing is 8 5/8". The original builder built for competing in Virginia City Hill Clime, Probably ran it without the filters. Engine has been so modified that taking it apart and changing carb or intakes is not an option. Jutst wish he had made some other choices. Too late for that now. Dual inline four a ir cleaner suggestions please? |
I am not a machinist. If I can use a drill press it is still a maybe deal. I was a Heavey Mobile Equipment Mechanic and sledge hammers, chains, pry bars, and hydraulic jacks were the tools I've used. I intend on buying and assembling stuff. Dual four carbs are old school and extreme, and not what the kids now are concerned with. So I know it is a small market but there are people out there that know or have seen stuff that I will not find without some help. So keep your eyes out for an inline dual four air cleaner that will work for me in a Cobra replica. Inline dual four -as large an filter element (tall) bottom and top. flow through filter would be a great asset.

Back in 68-69 ,I had 406 with try power, Then height wasn't a problem in 55 two door Customline. I just stacked two 427 elements with the oval air cleaner. Not sure I was really sealing with the two elements, Today they would probably have a thin metal plate that fit between the elements. keeping them situated. The K&N elements are running just 2 1/2" tall , or less. .Still like the Xstream top elements even though i never had one.

K&N E1963, Oval, 20.8L x 9.5w x 3H

Michael, what about sourcing a drop base flange from EBay, mated with some 16gauge or thicker aluminium alloy sheet, jig sawed to your required size for the top and bottom of the new air cleaner?
Cheers Glen |
I have never seen a dropped base on an inline dual four carb setup due to the linkage and such. I have not seen one though. The E1963 number went no where ,but they do show a E1960. a replacement for the original Oval for try power and two fours. I used 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 427 and came up with E1960 ,outside their specs say it is 20.313 in long and 9.5 in wide outside and 1.813 in tall. And shown as "out of stock". The trimmed down S&H air cleaners are like a governor. I 'm using a Mallory HyFire VI and do have the rev limiter set at 6,00 RPM

I bought and own a E1963 filter from K&N so it does go somewhere. If you are truly interested you will find it.
|
Tony Branda sells a 2.25 height FULL oval that I use currently.

I went to K&N filters and E1963 shows no results. I even searched using 1963 FORD Galaxie 500 with 406 and it comes back to E1960 which is out of stock. I think I bought the Cobra oval years ago, it is out in the shed. Would I dare stack two elements?

Search engine.....E-1963, E1963
|
Amazon has the K&N E-1963 in stock.
|
I did an AMAZON search and found the K&N E1963 it is shown as being 4" tall, Is that correct? and does it fit a Cobra oval top and bottom?
|
Utilizing a search should provide 30+ places this can be ordered a various prices. Summit, K&N store, Amazon....
Even searching this site with E-1963 will give you conformation that this part number was not just pulled out of a grab bag. |
K&N's website shows it as 3 inches tall. I'm guessing the Amazon spec is the size of the box. K&N has it on sale now.
|
AMAZON says it is 4' tall ebay and Speedway said it was 3" tall? We have an AMAZON prime account $124.99. They show having 6, and more coming. K&N show some dandy performance air cleaners with dropped bases and 6" tall elements. But then again , single four. Anything higher than 1 1/2" tall, I'll have to get another hood. I was thinking of the 4" to 5" range.
|
Amazon says it's 18x18x4.....that is obviously incorrect. The correct oval filter in the picture is 20.8 x 9.5 x 3 with the correct K&N part number.

As I understand, E1963 is a 3' tall K&N element that fits the oval Ford Cobra air cleaner. Are their any other numbers that are, maybe taller? If I wanted to stack filter elements would I need a plate to keep the elements inline. I wanted about 5" tall so hood bulge would only be 3 1/2". to see over or around.
I have two oval air cleaner metal bodies , I have a black with raised finned ,cast aluminum Cobra dual four top with a stamped sheet metal lower plate with the lower carb necks that raise the air cleaner above the carb neck about 9/16" I suppose to clear throttle linkage. And I have a cast aluminum top and bottom. top is polished on top and retains element by way of the outside edge and lower is just cast aluminum with element held in place by a bead inside of element. The lower cast bottom has extended 1/4" rings, raising the air cleaner to clear the throttle linkage and controls the filter element by a raised bead inside. The X-stream filter tops start with a 9" wide being the smallest, and mostly black rubber outer body and very little filter element. Again dual carbs are 8 5?8" center and two 9" tops will over lap. |

I have two oval air cleaner metal bodies for almost twenty three years now , I have a black with raised finned ,cast aluminum Cobra dual four top with a stamped sheet metal lower plate with the lower carb necks that raise the air cleaner above the carb neck about 9/16" I suppose to clear throttle linkage. Now my intent is to just go with a black, "COBRA" oval dual four air cleaner that I've had for 20 years in my shed. It has the cast aluminum finned top. It has a stamped sheet steel lower , but has a 5/8" tall flanges formed out the bottom, I assume for linkage clearance. I've looked at other oval bases that are cast aluminum only have a 1/4" flange rings that mounts on top of the carbs. I've since been looking around and do not find any oval air cleaner with sheet metal bottoms. The box the ovel air cleaner came in, does not have the return address so I do not know where or when I bought it. Are the sheet metal oval bases a bad choice or are the cast lowers a better choice? Should I use a cast aluminum base? I'm trying to combine shipping and want to plan out my order elements, wing nuts, and maybe a cast base.
