Greetings to all of you Contemporary owners out there!!

I have a technical question that perhaps some current owners of the earlier Contemporary Cobras (possibly 1980s or so?!) might be able to answer for me.

Being the second owner of a Contemporary Cobra, I have one of the earlier cars whose original owner had purchased in '79/80 timeframe, and the previous owner had the car custom built by Snow White Hot Rods in Fresno, CA. The car was driven in the So Cal area for a number of years, and I had purchased the car about 9 years while checking out Porsche Speedsters at a shop in Orange, CA. Since then, I have gone through the car again and done rebuilding or changes to it.

My question is a simple one - turn signals. On my wiring setup, in order to activate a left or right turn signal, I noticed that signaling voltage must go through a "diverter box" as called out in the original manuals before the voltage is routed to the individual terminals for the turn signal lights (front and rear). There is no information on what this box consists of..wires? Switch? Both?

I tried to open this box to see what is inside - how does it electrically function - but due to its age, it did not open easily. So, not wanting to break the small plastic black box with wires going in and out, I worked around this unit when I replaced other wiring for the car.

The turn signal assembly seems to be working providing 12 volts over to the diverter box when the left or right signals are activated, and the wiring is okay to the bulbs (checked by manually applying voltage from the terminal strips).

I did check with a friend of mine who has a newer Contemporary Cobra whether his setup was similar as mine. However, his wiring setup does not utilize a "diverter box" for turn signals.

So, my question is whether anyone with the older cars have had experience with this diverter box not working? What alternatives do I have to replace this with a simpler setup (besides Painless Wiring) since this is the only problem with the current wiring? Is this available for replacement, or do I need a new turn signal assembly? If so, what is a reference part number?

Once this is complete, I will not have to mess with electrical wiring on this car any more!!

Mine was built in 1991. In my car we use a trailer converter for the lights. This may be what was referred to as the diverter in your car.

The diverter box is just two DPDT relays which cancel the brake light feed to the rear when signaling. Hopefully, the attached pdf will come through and you can see the schematic. This is only a representation, and may not be exactly what CC used.

Thanks for the message - interesting wiring diagram! It was clear to read on after printing!

This gives me something to look further into. One thing I've found out is that when I activate my left or right signalling, I now get 12 volts over to the left and right signal terminals (input into the diverter box), but no output to the bulbs...maybea problem with 12 volts coming from my turn signalling/flasher setup.

I noticed on the diagram a VW signalling - any idea what that part number is? Might have to purchase a new signal switching indicator.

The turn signal lever is a 66 VW beetle unit. Best of luck.

If they don't have an answer to your questions regarding CCX ownership and maintenance, then no one does. Hi guys. I just bought CCX 3209. It's a 351C/Toploader with all Jag suspension. It got transplanted from Maryland to Arizona and the first thing that happened is the heat ate up what was left of the fuel pump. That's being replaced this weekend.

WRECKED BY A LADY WITH AN SUV AND A CELL PHONE WHILE ASSISTING AT AN ACCIDENT. SHE KILLED MY CAR, THE SUPERFORMANCE THAT WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF ME AND THE DPS CAR PARKED NEXT TO ME.

My car number is 3-3442. It has a 427 top oiler, Tremec 5 speed,dual fours on original intake,Edelbrock heads.It has the Jag suspension with torsion bars. Sits on original Halibrands. Haven't researched the number on my other car. It has a 427 sohc with dual four barrels,top loader four speed. This car also sits on unpolished original Halibrands.This car has Jag suspension with torsion bars also.

Did anyone ever get this list together?
My chassis number is #0000017 probably the 17th one made.

Mine is ccx-33954 , mid night blue w/ white stripes and white pipes. 427 side oiler , single 4 brl. w/ polished turkey pan and polished engine bay. 4 speed top loader. and all the goodies jag - watts and more polished aluminum.

I have said it before and it bears repeating. While I make no claim to seeing many, many CCX cars, of those I have seen, Bobs is clearly the masterpiece. What a BEAUTIFUL car. Of course I have yet to have the opportunity to see Dave Bates car up in NH, but I will rectify that as soon as Nick summons me up there to collect my parts! :LOL:

Bobs car makes me dream about what could have been had Contemporary stayed in business and developed and refined their car over the years as ERA has. We would essentially be looking at a round tube frame ERA.
