Your right Wilf,,,,I'll let it go. That was then, this is now......

but I have lots of fond memories working on the MG's on the side of the road hopeing I can get it home. Heck, I'm a Lucas expert, lol.

You know, "back in the day", I had thoughts of going to England and working as a mechanic. I cut my teeth on English rides!

All I wanted was a 5 speed gearshift knob.

Talk about a hijacked thread. Good job Wilf.

I used to have a MGA Twin Cam, with plywood floors.
This should be good enough for you guys to start talking about "termites" within a few posts.

Excaliber 12-18-2002 03:31 PM

Twin cammer!!!! Oh yeah, you da man!

Ernie

You know when someone does a search for Leycock De Haviland and a gear shift knob thread comes up,,,,,,it will be WTF????
Ha HA!

TerrysSPF 12-19-2002 05:49 PM

Turk - I just wanted to comment on something you said in your second post on this thread: 99% of your driving was highway and you wanted to reduce your rpm's during cruising and you felt the 5th gear in the TKOII would do that. Actually, if you want to REDUCE your rpm's, go with the regular TKO with the .68 5th; the .83 in the TKOII will INCREASE your rpm's on the highway! I'm going through that battle in my mind right now (along with the 418 vs. 522 battle), because I will also do a lot of highway driving and I'm not sure I want to be doing over 3000rpm @ 75mph (TKOII). At 3000 r's in the TKO you're doing 90! -I should mention that these figures are with a 3.73 rear which is what I'm looking at (or a 3.55).......but the point is still the same.....you'll be cruising at HIGHER rpm's in the TKOII vs. the TKO. The II is supposed to be a little stronger which is what made it more appealing to me (I wasn't offered a Richmond by my salesmen) and I've already asked if you can change just the 5th gear ratio in the TKOII but was told that you can't. Just from reading some of these post, I think I may change to a 3.55 instead of the 3.73. Sounds like the 3.73 is too much.

Turk 12-19-2002 07:02 PM

Terry,
If you are in the same boat as I am when it comes to your driving style.....mostly highway, your 3:73 rear end ratio is really too much.
I lived for a year with a 4 speed toplader and a 3:31 rear end, and felt it was just right for most of my driving. I would definetely go with something less than 3:73 just because you already admitted to being a cruiser.

I am afraid I am staying with TKO II at this point. We'll see what happens and maybe compare notes.
Good luck.

Three friggin pages on finding a shift knob.
I sure hope you don't ask for something complicated, like choosing the perfect carnuba.

When are we gonna see some pictures of your REAL Cobra?

Cranky;)

Sorry,page 4:LOL:

Turk 12-19-2002 07:13 PM

Cranky,
If you set your display to something less than 4 posts to a page , you would see that we are only on page 2. We have a long way to go yet.

This weekend CompUsa has a sale on 12" monitors. You won't believe the improvement over those 9" monitors. You can display Evan's entire signature on one page. Go ahead and get one..

Now if I use a shift knob that only has a 4 speed layout on a 5 speed transmission will I be able to use my fifth gear?

Roscoe - you could if it was in a blue car, but not if it was a red one. :JEKYLHYDE

Turk 12-21-2002 05:25 PM

You guys are making fun of me I think!

That's OK. Paybacks can be tough.

RACER X #99 12-21-2002 05:46 PM

Turk,
I'll save that for another day. Right now the best debate is over who's series 4000 is more real.
And I always thought that Vette owners were the anal ones.;)

Ron61 12-23-2002 07:20 AM

Turk,

How about a 5 speed pattern in the dash with leds that light to tell you what gear you are in. You can't read the pattern on the knob when your hand is on it anyway. Stay away from a 6 speed or you may have to glue two 3 speed knobs together.

All this is from my jealousy about your new car. I don't suppose the truck delivering it could get sidetracked to Redding could it. I would take good care of the car. I think when Ron ( Computerworks ) had his shipped he came and stood on the West side of Provo to make sure the truck went East as
I was trying to get his sent to me too.

Enjoy the car and I am going to try to get down to Vacaville to see it next Summer.

Ron:LOL:

Turk 12-23-2002 09:30 AM

Terry,
Thanks. Sent you my address already.

Ron61,
I was thinking about doing something like that myself. Just like on my bike...I never remeber what gear I am in. A numerical led display would be a welcome relief.
You can stop in Vacaville anytime you like.

You could do something like this with a nice chrome bezel to match your gauges...
