I need a new Paint Color!!

My Cobra is in for a winter makeover....new engine....upolstery and paint......It currently is Guardsman Red with Black stripes.......feel like I need a real change

Then I saw this....Chameleon paint and Ohhhhhhhhh.......but thought that I would ask the question....

First question is if you could paint yours all over again....what color scheme would you paint yours??

Second question is how many like the Chameleon paint??? What color of stripes to go with this color???

here is the link to this amazing paint color...... http://drag.race-cars.com/carsales/f...1/67cob1pa.htm

Looks like the same paint as PPG Chromillusion. Similar to the DVII. See picks in the Gallery.

Changes color from purple to green, gold etc. depending on light and angle.

Jeff Frigo 12-18-2002 10:32 PM

Chameleon paint is very expensive and don't wreck it, you will never get it to match.

Rob of Hamburg 12-18-2002 10:41 PM

I was told by a detail shop the paint will cost about $2000 a gallon. Don't Snakes eat Chameleons?

Turk 12-18-2002 10:50 PM

I don't know if it is the application or the paint itself, but I have seen some $800.00 a quart Chromeillusion and it looked nothing like DV's car.
It didn't matter which way you looked at it or where the light was coming from, all it would do was to go from one shade of brown to another and a little army khaki. Not very attractive at all.

PAINT COLOR

I ALWAYS LIKE TO TRY AND DO A COLOR SCHEME THAT IS SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT (AND YOU CERTAINLY HAVE THAT) YOU DON'T SEE MANY GREYS AROUND. I DON'T MEAN SILVERS. THAY HAVE SOME MED. COLOR GREY THAT CHANGE DEPENDING ON THE LIGHT,THAT I THINK ARE PRETTY COOL. JUST MY THOUGHTS!!!!
HAVE FUN WITH YOUR WINTER PROJECT..

Going along with the Chromillusion paint scheme, why not do the stripes that color? A while back in Kit Car, there was a silver Cobra with Chromillusion stripes. It didn't look too bad.

My Cobra now is Guardsman Blue with white stripes. I will be repainting soon and I don't know if I'll stay the same color or not. If I go a different color, it'll be silver with no stripes. I like the silver color Honda uses on its S2000.

Paint color

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far....I want to keep this thread going

CaseyT......I don't see any grey in this paint......maybe your monitor is out of whack**)

The notion of painting the stripes the Chameleon paint is a good one.....what base color that will grab people by the guniskas (pineapples) and make em take notice??/

RallySnake 12-19-2002 06:27 PM

Mohuska,

A while back, I saw a jeep CJ7 in the Excaliber Casino in Las Vegas with a great paint job. It was an American Flag waving in the wind from front to back. The blue field with the white stars took up most of the hood with the red and white stripes flapping down the sides. The painter must have been quite an artist to capture the movement of the flag and represent it on the bodywork like that. If money were unlimited, that's the way I would go.

Car colors

I'm selecting the color now for an ERA 289/FIA. Because this is a weekend driver I followed some advice in the forum to use a non-custom formula. I'm leaning towards Oxford Green II, a BMW color. But may do a variation with some bronze metalflake in one of the clear coats - waiting for the sample.

Oxford Green II:

What I REALLY want is vineyard green with bronze stripes - but the wife doesn't like it at all. sigh...

fordracer 12-20-2002 12:30 PM

Personally I wouldn't do it. #1 reason, the ricers will love it. Like Jeff said , don't wreck it because it won't match. Even if all you are doing is touching up paint chips. My original plan was to go with Ford Mineral Grey with a single black stripe. All trim except for the windshield would be black. I think that would look mean. Chromallusion looks good on a race car like you showed but a street car, uh uh.

That's funny I was thinking of a light blue metallic I saw on a BMW Z3 & go with pianted meatballs probably white with either a red or white stripe across the front.

My other Idea is black with orange meatballs & stripe.

I just can't decide yet & frankly don't have to :JEKYLHYDE

Tongue Pirate 12-20-2002 01:37 PM

Oh yeah! Don't do it! I think it would look awful! There is a Porshe down the street from me that was painted like that. Yuk! IMO it doesn't look good on most cars!

Mohuska 12-21-2002 03:29 PM

Keepin it alive

There have been some good comments about paint color.....but I know that there are many more folks out there that have, are or will be considering paint colors....

Note: There are way too may blue Cobras.....

Well...I have been chastized by my other half for wanting my car to look like the "pimpmobile"......painting it a chameleon paint.....well what do ya'll think??

DV has a Chameleon paint.....Do you like that color????

MORE FEEDBACK PLEEEEEZZZZEEEEE.....Thanks

BTW.....What is a Tongue Pirate....that somehow scares the livin cr*p out of me......

Try an"off black". Ultimately, I may move toward a color I saw on a REAL 1936(?) Talbot Lago at Monterey Concours d' three years ago---it looked black, until you caught the sun "right", then it became a deep (and I mean DEEP) purple. Not too much blue, nor too much red. I'm shooting for a similar color. Deep blue-plus-burgundy-plus-black. Dare to be different but not strenously so. I agree that Blue has been "done", ditto, in my view, the wide stripes (but I like both). Personally, wild "chameleon" stuff and "ghost stripes" aren't my cup of tea. Im going for a "miles-deep" near-black---it gets the "double take" and it's stealthy. Cripes, if you've got a bellowing beast of a car---why double the impact? Some would say "why not? In for a penny..." I'd say, keep a deadly blade in a subtle sheath. A conformist I ain't. Hope this helps and/or stirs the pot.

I've said it before and I'll say it again......Hugger Orange with Houndstooth stripes and seat covers. Now that would be eye candy!

btsai 12-21-2002 09:02 PM

FYI, Chromalusion comes in several different "shades". There are 36 in all. I walked through the DuPont booth at the SEMA convention and saw a bunch. Some I liked. Some I didn't. A little over $600 a quart.

Frankly, I don't like the chromawhatever paint. I think it was developed by some crazy scientist who couldn't make up his mind. :)
