If you could add one more gauge...
to your dash, what would it be?
I have the basic four - Water temp, Fuel, Oil Pressure, Volts. My dash needs one more, so I am trying to decide between Oil Temp, Trans Temp (automatic), and a new one - AFR. I just found out that Autometer makes an AFR meter that matches my set. Car is not intended for racing, but may see occaisional laps. If it were more race-oriented, then the Oil temp gauge would win. |
In addition to yours I have
Fuel Pressure Oil Temp Clock Roscoe |
Oil temperature.

Do not install a clock in your dash. Every time I leave in my Cobra, when I return my wife wants to know why I have been gone so long. I tell her I lost track of time. If you don't have a clock in the dash and you conveniently forget to wear your watch, how will you know what time it is? Just because you are gone 3 hours to get gas and return with less gas than you left with at least you will have an excuse: "I just lost track of time!" (I unplugged my clock and told my wife it is broken.) The oil temp gauge would be my choice.

In order of importance
tach oil pressure water temp volts or amps oil temp fuel pressure fuel level I think the dash is about full now |
Mr. Fixit, i think for a primarily street driven car with a carburetor, fuel level would win over fuel pressure. Hey, if you run out of gas, there is no fuel pressure! lol.
I got the idea of the AFR meter from Tom Wells, who has one on his car. With fuel injection, AFR is usually monitored and adjusted for by the system, even if you have no meter. With a carb, it would be good to know how any adjustments affect it. |
Kountze Cobra.....great point on the clock. I can see myself needing the "lost track of time" excuse to be at least plausible.
I envy all Texas Cobra owners who have cars on the road this year......looks like a 12 month driving season we're having!! |
An unusual one???
I have seen an original 427 with quite a bit of racing history which is equipped with quite a few redundant gauges but the one that caught my attention was one marked "water pressure". It is used to indicate a water leak in the cooling system, or a backup indicator of potential overheating, it reacts more quickly.
Food for thought Rick |
In addition to the usual complement of gages, i have found my VDO fuel pressure gage very useful, i ended up expoxing a 22 gage hypodermic needle in its line to remove any gage fluctuation, so is very responsive, but does not flutter. I always watch that and my oil pressure gage when i start my car, and i have found the fuel pressure gage very diagnostic when i had some hesitation at WOT, indicating a clogged fuel filter.
I have also put in a 20 PSI low oil pressure warning sender in my oil filter mount, with a red warning light on my dash, aimed right at my eyes. If i ever hole my sump, or lose pressure, i might not notice my oil pressure gage, so this will give me a heads up in time, hopefully. I am going to put in a 220 degree water temp warning light this winter. I like gages, many years ago, on my VW Type 3 Squareback, much modified, i had 8 VDO gages!! Enough that when they all ran, they bogged the motor!!! I also have an MSD rev limit light mounted low, aimed up at my eyes. Sort of a "gage" i guess. |
Hal,,,,sounds like your just about ready for the Heads Up Display next, lol. I like lot's of gauges. The water pressure gauge idea is a good one!!

On second thought, who needs gauges.
When the motor is loud, then shift. If you smell coolant, you are too hot When the lifters tick, oil problem If it leans out in the corners, add gas If the headlights get dim, charging problem I have never looked at a speedometer anyway |
But the speedometer is the second thing you look at......after you see the policeman's radar gun pointing your way. At least that is when I end up looking at it.
|
I know when I'm on the track I NEVER look at the gauges. Makes a strong case for idiot lights. I shift when the motor "sounds loud" or I loose power 'cause the valves are floating (again), lol. Rev limiter was the KEY component for me.

My car only has only fuel pressure, so I would love to have fuel level! (DUH!)

Barometer, if you don't have a top for that thing..

Oil temp is next on YOUR list, given the gauges you have. I want a deer whistle!!!! |
I'm wiring in an Autometer Tri-Alert annunciator. It is a small box that works with Autometer elec gauges. You can set three gauges to set off warning lights and/or buzzers. You can have one light or three. You set each gauge individually and whether you want it to activate on high or low.
No time to look at gauges while hammering it around a road race course but a big red light and/or buzzer will make you aware of a problem before it becomes one. http://www.autometer.com/hp/2001_cat...s_art/5347.jpg Roscoe |
I agree with Roscoe that the most useful gauge is one that gets your attention when a problem is developing. You need to keep your eyes on the road and not the gauges. A sound or light that alerts you to a problem will let you react quicker.

Great idea Roscoe!
I have heard that the Stage II gauge consists of an electrical connection to your right testicle.....:3DSMILE: This was a modification made by a crew chief after his driver repeatedly ignored the big red low pressure warning light..... It had variable voltage as an option - 30 volts to 16,000. :) |
ERA,
Thanks for that! I was wondering why it wasn't working....I had it connected to my LEFT testicle. Now it's working fine. Roscoe (with the appropriate sound file) http://www.priveye.com/sounds/psychotic.wav |
