another 427 Cobra on eBay
following 427 Cobra listed on eBay :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1875959642 the listing does not give the complete serial (weird to NOT list it for historical research)...however, in my scanning the SAAC 97 Registry, it appears this car is CSX 3237 as listed on pg 221. now, since the 289 slabside CSX 2214 just sold on ebay for $216,100, how much will this bring ? bill |
Question to those in the know, is EBay the way to get top $ on these cars? I would think Barrett-Jackson would be the preferred method.
|
Thanks, Bill. What do you say gang?? What will the top bid be? With $200K in a resto the breakeven cost must be fairly high, assuming he didn't it buy it pre-'85
|
You gotta figure the reserve to be about $375K or so.
In any event it's a nice car from the photos. |

I plan on attaching my wiring harness with a bead of silicone between the wiring harness and the firewall. Would that be better?
How about some of these if I used them sparingly? |
The car looks to be in excellent shape but $350K plus!!!! Out of curiosity, I had the impression that all the 2 X 4 engines were 428s and not 427s. Also there were more 428 engines built than 427s because they were a lot cheaper. I am no Cobra historian, does someone know if this is the case.

According to the 1997 registry this car originally came with the 428 motor. It is listed in the registry as in #4 condition which means it has been modified or changed in some ways and that could include almost anything including the motor. It means that it has also been restored and repainted but not necessairly to original specifications. Only way to know for sure is to look at the car as so many changes have been made since the registry was last published.
|
further reading of the 97 registry shows why this car has been rated a 4...it was originally a 428 and apparently now has a 427 (engine change not reported in the registry however). registry does say car was red when new . later repainted blue and then back to red. at one time a hood scoop and a custom roll bar was installed as well as quick jacks and side pipes that exited the fenders under and not thru them at the front sides. now car has no scoop, no roll bar, no quick jacks and under car exhaust. based on the hemmings adv though i did not call the seller as i did not have 350k firm laying around....if i did, this would be a nice car for my garage..oh well...hey , gotta go, gotta get a lottery ticket as maybe................................. bill.

Electric cooling fan on the engine side of the radiator. That don't seem right.
Turk,,,sillycone OK,,,,hair bands,,,,NOT. ha ha Ernie |
By the way,,,,HOW is it possible to spend 200K on a resto unless the car was pretty well trashed to begin with? I'll give you 15K for the paint job and 30K on the motor. So 150K for interior, exhaust, trans, rear end and suspension rebuild? Seems like 200K is WAY to much.

I agree with you guys on the 200K restoration - I think that what you aren't considering is the profit factor - and in this case, noting the incorrect tie downs and clamps on this wiring harness as pointed out by Computerworks, I would say that the profit factor must have been pretty high!
I wonder how much it would cost to build a Cobra from scratch using available components? Say you came into possession of a CSX number from a totalled and disposed of car and you wanted to build it. I think you can buy every single component either from Shelby or Kirkham or McCluskey....whether it be a complete body or gas tank or rear end..... I am sure it could be done for a lot less than $200,000. |

The "profit factor" as you suggest has got to be a major player in the numbersT
Turk, as for attaching the wiring harness I would consider what other english cars used for that. Seems to me Jaguar, for instance, used a metal with rubber grommet and a screw to secure the loom to the dash\firewall. I have no clue what the Cobras used, but I bet it was standard "Lucas" technology of the time. Shouldn't be "that hard" to duplicate. Glueing the loom sounds cool, that would be really clean, IF it would hold up in the long run. For a 200K resto. Original Lucas retainers per item: $250 Original Lucas wiring: $10,000 Sillycone: Priceless Ernie |
Labor...labor...labor
I guess the real answer, Pat, lies in the labor.
What would you guess the hourly rate is for Craftsman level-So.Cal-McCluskey work? $75/hour? ...$100/hour? How long is does a down-to-frame restoration take? 1000 hours? ...2000 hours? more? I've got nearly a hundred hours into KMP178, just taking it down to the frame... and it doesn't look like I've done anything yet! (...that's cause I like to play with the little pieces instead of working!) Those installment-restoration jobs you see on Speed (I forget the shop in Canada's name) ...you know, a 'Cuda or a Camaro that's done over the season of shows....they end up with over a 100k price tag for the work. |
Labor is a major part of the cost -you are right....the people who charge the big bucks for labor are (hopefully) pro's at it though and compared to the d***king around you and I do when we "work" on our cars, they get things done fast. They also only have to things once - not eight times like I do! Then again I charge less than an eighth of what they get - free maybe?
Even so, we are talking about a relatively simple car - not a Barracuda or a Ferrari that is extremely complicated to restore correctly. I saw on the restoration of a COPO427 Camaro where they even had to duplicate the OVERSPRAY for gods sake....details like that on a Cobra are not required due to the custom nature of the car to begin with...in my opinion. |
