I think Jamo's point bobl is not your pedigree but rather who are you? 90% of the posts here are by someone who is known to someone else here.. Sort of a rich guy cloneing method (they call it inbreeding in the south)

When someone, particulary a FNG pops in with a tidbit about a change as profound as this it raises eyebrows. It is conceivable you are an employee of the Grouch or simply an interested party who just happened by.. The chance of you being an interested party who just happened by is pretty slim..

Either way we sleep well knowing that as ineffective as DOT and EPA are we have nothing to worry about. Beyond that until any company who builds chassis and rolling assemblies put an engine in their cars the "cars" do not fall under DOT or EPA charter.. As for the Grouch.. Tell your boss to take his medicine on time and he won't be so cranky.

bobl 01-23-2003 09:04 PM

Well..... Michael, I dont work for the grouch, the grinch, c shelby or anyone else in the "INDUSTRY". And Mark, I do VERY sincerely apologize for my "hipshot assessment" comment toward you. You did not deserve that..... You'll have to forgive me for reacting to the Foghorn Leghorn, point blank, 9 gun, 16" naval rifle broadside I received from one of the members for having the affrontery to post an, if you will, alert to a very real, and very current Washingtonian inquiry that does have some potentially serious repercussions.

I looked at length to see if anyone had yet commented. When I saw naught, I made the decision to post.

Pity the poor guy who comes here and opens his mouth...especially when he has no covert agenda and he's just trying to raise an awareness issue.

Jamo 01-23-2003 09:07 PM

Hmmmm....aw say, maybe yall misunderstood da inquiry der boy.

What's your name again?:p

ToyCollector 01-23-2003 09:09 PM

For those pilots out there, IF THIS IS TRUE,and IF HISTORY repeats (yeah I know, that why I'm posting)---this smells of eventual "experimental" versus "turnkey" to me. Greatest thing that ever happened to aviation by the way. I'm not ducking by the way BOBL, and if your post is legit, thanks for the heads up but I have no worries around this. I'd rather see those bureaucrats solve real problems, rather than self/job preservation. The letter MarkIV posted--probably took the guy a whole year to write.

petek 01-23-2003 09:22 PM

BiB,

Are you saying that a four wheeled contraption without an engine or transmission (i.e. turnkey minus) would fall under DOT regulation? That's a bit of a stretch for the DOT isn't it?

OTOH, I can understand their interest in complete cars ... but there are a LOT more hot rods out there being built in small shops that would seem to fall under the same grouping!

Oh, Jamo... did you catch that fella's name?

AND CARROLL SHELBY SHOOTS HIMSELF IN THE FOOT!

Apparently, some here still can't tell when Ol' Shel is blowing smoke up their a$$e$.

Do you really think Carroll would "get even" by trying to get the government to change the very regulations that allow Shelby American, Inc. to sell CSX4000, CSX7000 and CSX8000 cars? What the heck are you smoking???

CS in Mustang and Fords 1/2003:

"The government isn't going to put up with these Cobras coming in from all over the place with no emmissions or safety standards. I don't know how much longer they will be able to take advantage of this loophole."

"They don't have to meet safety and emissions standards. You'd be surprised. With the Series I , we had to meet the same standards as General Motors."

If Mr. Shelby believes his Cobra problem is imported, and the government should stop imports - that's a trade issue.

If the problem is safety and emissions "loopholes", that's another story. Carroll's current 289 and 427 cars meet the same kit or speciality car definitions as all the other imported and domestic replicas in the American market.

Show me a CSX 4000, 7000 or 8000 that was delivered with airbags, a chime that reminds you to remove the ignition key, or bumpers meeting current federal standards. In fact, show me a 4000, 7000 or 8000 that was delivered with a drive train and completely assembled by S.A.I. (Completed Shelby replicas are assembled by third parties, i.e. dealers, not S.A.I.)

A completely assembled car LIKE THE SERIES I (CSX5000) must meet all new car standards. It is not a kit, but a full production piece like any GM or Ford.

Shelby would like you to believe that those bad imports are getting a break when in fact, he builds cars TO THE VERY SAME SAFETY AND EMISSIONS STANDARDS.

If Carroll "ratted out" the kit car guys and manages to close loopholes that allow for Cobra replicas in the United State without current emission and safety standards HE WILL PUT HIMSELF OUT OF THE REPLICA BUSINESS.

Carroll has to meet the same standards for his replicas and the imported Superformance. Or the domestic ERA or Unique, etc. It looks like Shelby is trying to paint imported replicas (SPF) as dangerous and noxious. Of course, his own original domestic replicas (some with Polish parts) are very safe and ultra clean.

CS may be mad at the Feds and California for holding his feet to the fire on the PRODUCTION Series I cars, but he knew full well what standards applied befor the first CSX5000 was built. He may be mad that people found out that his Continuation cars were made of all new parts, and he may be mad at Superformance's success, but that's not going to differentiate his kit cars from anybody else's - foreign or domestic.

Just more Snake Oil.

Stan--amazing how simple logic can be so damn hard to see.;)

bobl 01-23-2003 09:45 PM

OK.....the inquiry is very real. But this is second hand. Let me repeat, this part is second hand, but very well placed intelligence information..... The D.O.T. pencil-necked, seminar-attending, vacation-taking, double-dipping, do-nothing bureaucrat that started all of this has "determined" that kit cars are somehow different than Cobra replicas. The hot rod or Italian supercars are thought to be in a separate class. Cobras are "daily drivers" and this is driving the ruckus. They have decided they dont know very much about the Cobra industry.

There seems to be more than moderate interest to make all Cobra replicas.....and their component parts..... conform to current D.O.T. regulations.... but I have that only on conjecture from two sources. But two sources who dang well should know.
The inquiry is a lengthy questionnaire that gathers a LOT of information - thats fact.

NOW..... THE REASON FOR GATHERING IT IS STILL HERESAY, SECOND HAND INFO. That's absolutely all I may say.....because thats all I know.

Are you a Chicken, Mister?

bobl 01-23-2003 09:51 PM

And one more thing about the Grinch shooting himself in the foot, putting himself out of business, etc.....

Anyone care to comment what they saw of the Grinch at the BJ ( how appropriate ) Auction?

He's 80..... looks 120, has very little left to lose, and is likely real pissed about the legal defeats. Think about it.

IT'S MY FAULT GOING TO A JESUIT SCHOOL

Jeez Jamo,

Sometimes I feel like my head's gonna explode. It's the same feeling I get when I listen to an applicant at our Planning Commission meetings!

What I have been told

Is that factory COMPLETED cars (of any make) will be required to meet current safety standards such as crumple zones, bumpers, (airbags ?) and such.

The temporary solution would be, (if all this is true) of course, to buy it as a turnkey MINUS, and put yer own motor in it. You could pay a local shop to do it if you were sly. Let's relax and see if this is true before we all jump off the deep end into an empty pool :3DSMILE:

Excaliber 01-23-2003 10:00 PM

As far as CS being "pissed" about the replica industry, yeah, I would think it possible he WOULD shoot himself in the foot just to "get even". At the same time I find it hard to believe he has anything to do with this,,,,,still,,,,,theres a maybe in there!

I am not aware of ANY builder that actually produces a "turn key" in house, by the way. I thought they ALL contracted with someone "one door over", or around the block, a "second" party to the buyer. THATS the loop hole I see working here (if you want to call it that). Any industry that starts to get to big or known to well is going to draw attention from somebody eventually.

BOBL - A KIT CAR IS A REPLICA

I'm totally at a loss for words. Perhaps it's your quoting Freddie Blasie, or your "intellegence" sources. I don't know which is more impressive.

Whoa Nellie.

STG 01-23-2003 10:09 PM

OH MY ACHING HEAD

B in B,

Factory completed cars ARE already required to meet a plethora of state and federal standards. Further, your "temporary" solution of TKMs is currently the law of the land!!!! It has been for years!!!
