OT: Wanted Rust free Triumph TR6 Project

Well, with all of the off topic posts going on, I figured I would stretch the envelope just a bit. What am I looking for, the subject line states it all. What am I will to spend, roughly $2,500 at this time........Prefer within 200 miles of my home base deep in the heart of NJ, but may travel (or have picked up) the right project car...................

Serious inquiries only please.........

Yours In Not Just Fords,

Bill S.

Bill,
Good luck finding a rust free example.....British Leyland built in the rust.....I think it was a design feature.....;)

I had a '73, when it was very quiet in the garage and all the lights were turned off, I could actually hear it rusting...sounded like termites chewing on wood!

well, i just have to go even further off topic. There is something about one's first car. In '66, i called my dad from college, told him i was getting a Honda 305 Scrambler, and he immediately replied "i'll pay half of a car to keep you off a motorcycle".

So that afternoon i bought in Lincoln, NE, my first car, a '63 TR-4. Drove it 44,000 miles in the 11 months i owned it. Rebuilt the engine twice, once driving 1100 miles with 3 pounds of oil pressure! Experienced just about everything in that tiny British Roadster, loved pretty girls, long trips, countless thousands of corners i drifted thru, and so much more. Was my "daily driver" even in colder than 20 below Zero.

In winter, i would have to go out several times at night, start it, and sit in it until it warmed up, put Sterno cans under the oil sump in the morning, staying away from the oil and fuel drips, heated dipstick (once wiping it with my hands absent-mindedly, suffering a tremendous burn across my hand !), had a seat stolen, drove it without any driver's seat for a week, and on and on. I learned to be prepared and resourceful with that car.

Sold it for more than i paid for it, for an MBG, and have wanted another TR-4 ever since. I loved the TR-6's when they came out, but of course, could not afford one. Remember, a new TR-6 cost as much as a new GTO or 442 or Road Runner back then.

I think starting off with an English Roadster is what made me always want to drive small, nimble, sports cars. Which is what i have done since.

The thing about an English Roadster, was when you got to the party or whatever, everyone turned your way and said

"look, it's Hal, he made it."

When you get your '6, be sure and post some pictures of it.

Thanks for the memories,

Mike,

Yes, I know all about the rust on a TR6, as I have had several.....Same goes with Lucas electrics.............Any yes, the constant oil leaks (hey, it's not dripping oil, just marking it's territory).............Been there, done that countless times.........Need something else while i await the sale of my Cobra (see the For Sale section), and the purchase of a spec racer kit of some type..........Just keep your eyes open, as this was(and still is) a serious wanted ad..................

Hey Bill, if I find a TR6 that's exactly what you want.....you'd trade for the Cobra right? :)

mrmustang 01-25-2003 03:26 AM

Hal,

I've owned several TR6's over the years.....Just helped a friend pick up a 71 TR6 restoration project (like a giant lego set, only bigger)...Figured I would find one and due side by side restorations....His all stock, mine a little bit differently (minilites, rollbar, hotter cam, better suspension, etc), which is why I do not need a high dollar car to start with........

Howard,

What have you got on your hands???

Steve,

You should know better...Then again, I did post it for sale yesterday, with three semi solid leads already......So, you never know.....

mrmustang, have you looked at www.traderonline.com , there are a few in the 2k-3.5 range(one in NY) that need restoration. I think 3.5k asking price is 2k cash after a couple weeks. I was suprised to see TR6's going(asking) in the low teens, I figured they gave those cars away. I always thought they were sweet(looking) cars, but in high school, the local hottie had a new one and it was the most unreliable car I ever saw. Could you fit a 289 in that thing?;)

mrmustang 01-25-2003 08:50 AM

SF,

Yes, you can indeed fit a small block Ford motor in the engine compartment...All under the hood to boot........

Hal-
Does this look like yours? This is a '62. My dad had the same exact car that is pictured up until a few years ago. The stories of this car are legend. It's the first car that I can remember sitting in as a kid, running through the gears and making vrrooom, vroom noises. Truly a great little car.

My dad got the car from his best friend 30 plus years ago. When his best friend died a few years ago, his wife asked my dad if she could have the car back because it was the car that her husband had when they first met and started dating. So, my dad gave it to her, and we think she has since sold it:CRY:

Whoops no picture. Let me try again

Chaplin 01-25-2003 12:40 PM

One more try . . .

Forget it. It's hopeless. Hal maybe I'll email you the picture.

mrmustang,

Since you've played with the rust before, I'll just ask have you had them dipped to de-rust? There are some places that need to be drilled to let the chemical in and the preservative/inhibitor.

ALL British cars were built rusty....not just Triumphs......:):)

The first car I rode across the US in was a TR3 (small mouth) a lovey car in every respect. Good luck

mrmustang 01-26-2003 03:28 AM

Al,

Rusty frames get replaced, not repaired in my book...Kind of like working with a clean slate from car "A" to car "B"...I usually sand blast, prime with POR 15, then top coat a month down the road (do the same thing with Mustangs these days).......Never had any problems with this, and I do occasionally see some of my old handywork on the show field(s)...................

One more . . .

Maybe one always loves the memories of their first car, in my case a white '63 TR-4. I kept looking over these fine pictures above, and i still think the Triumphs were a very handsome, muscular, masculine car for the times.

The Brit's had the sound down just right, too.

Thanks for the memories.

mrmustang 01-29-2003 07:13 PM

Nice pics from "Imports at Carlisle"...When were those taken??

Bill S.

PS: I wonder if the Kirkhams would consider replicating a TR6 for me out of Aluminum :D :D :D ........You did know that the engine compartment will easily fit a 289 FIA style motor in it with no clearance problems........
