Mr. Bruce, the Ebay HiTech car from a month ago did not close. The buyer did to complete the transaction(according to the seller). I was the #2 bidder and the seller contacted me about the car, but the car had been bid up by a buyer who didn't close, so I would not pay the high bid price(the seller and I never talked price so I don't know if he was willing to drop back to my former high bid, before the "buyer" bid the car up another 3k).
Before I returned the sellers call, I called the Kirkhams and got the info on their cars. As I was suffering from a bad case of "arruminum" envy, I had to have an alloy car. I decided to wait until I was ready to buy a car and buy a Kirkham before I bought the HiTech frame and body and got in over my head on a build.
In the meantime the Kirkhams started Ebaying a few cars(there is a 427 on Ebay now at about 23.1k) and I could not resist the 289FIA's that they put up for auction. I was planning on buying the 289 FIA until they put up the 289 FIA body on the 427 frame, I could not resist that car and I feel I got a great deal at 19.1k for the frame/body/accessories. Now the waiting begins.......

Jim

Edit: I think the price of a Kirham roller is 59k, Kirkham has posted on this site and Steve Kirkham has told me on the phone that KMS will complete the Ebay car to a roller for 20k in parts and 5k in labor. This will not get you a car at the 59k price point, as some things are different from the original Cobra parts. Two of these are the brakes, which are Wilwoods, and the rear end, which Steve will have to explain(I think it's a jag type rearend without inboard brakes as opposed to the unit they put in their original specification roller.

Jim, your ebay story has all the sounds of a shill bid technique. Warning to others who might be interested. Good thing you passed, you got a screamin' deal on the Kirkham.

Jim ,

You lucked out of that high tech, I would much rather buy the parts I needed from the Kirkhams than try to figure out what is missing from that high tech, not to mention you got the best of both worlds with that chassis!

Default Missed by a minute or so!

I just lost the bid on a Lotus 7. Thats the SECOND Lotus I've missed out on. I guess should quit messing around just go get Cobra #2.

What the heck is a "shill" bid? And whats that "sniper" thing I keep hearing about?

This time I lost the bid with only minutes to go, I'm bummed!

Ernie,
A shill bid is when the seller bids up his own item, usually under a different name, or if he's sneakier, has a friend do it. Then," darn, that winning bidder flaked out". How convenient!!!! The winning bidder does sometimes flake out because they got bid fever and then the wife kicks the sh** out of them for being an idiot, but, unfortunately I think that happens less than the shill bidding.

Sniping is done with a program that monitors an auction. If you use the program, you tell it to bid in the last few seconds on your behalf if the price is within the perameters you set. That way you don't have to have one eye on the clock and your finger poised over the keyboard, with your heart pumping with excitement as the auction draws to a close.

Thanks for the heads up Bob! I went out to breakfast this morning thinking I got it in the bag! Heck I been hi bidder for a couple of days. I would MUCH rather eat a calm breakfast than be sweating it out over the last few minutes of an auction, ha ha! I'm gonna get that sniper thing!

Ernie ,

You dont need that sniper thing , you just have to "be cool" if the price is still good with two minutes to go ,enter your maximum bid and hit the enter key with less than a minute to go, this will cut down on the time a shill has to tweak up the bid in $5.00 increments to find your top bid and you wont end up bidding against yourself. As near as I can figure there is really no reason to bid on any thing you want with more than 40 seconds on the clock, I know that sounds mercenary , but your only freind out there is you. good luck!! Karl

I've been able to make last "second" bids with less than 30 seconds on the clock - using a cable modem the refresh time is about 5 seconds. Have two browsers going, one with the final bid info all ready to click "confirm bid". The other browser used to watch any other bids in the final minutes. Of course, I usually only bid on 10 dollar items!

I was kinda looking forward to see how Wilf drives. And shifting with your left hand? Now that should be interesting!

I would have made it a "track" car only.
