Grundy insurance how good?

I have a question for y'all about Grundy insurance. I received my new quote from Hagerty, and they have jumped their prices by about $250.00 from my past years prices. I decided to call Grundy and get a quote and they gave me a fair quote, which was under Hagertys. They said they would send me some paperwork with the quote and all. It has been about 2 1/2 weeks an nothing in the mail, I will probably call them again and give them one more chance, but I wanted to know what kind of experience anyone out there has had with Grundy, and if I should avoid them like I should have CMC. One other note I have State Farm and they gave me a real good price here at the local level, until the bean counters looked at the car and the price it was worth, and it jumped way high. When I told my agent about the cheaper costs others were getting with State Farm he had told me he had heard that sometimes when you give state farm the policy number of someone who has the cheap rate, then they may bump up the other guys cheaper rate to, so watch out for that FYI.

They are probably doing a stated value....State Farms stated value policies shot up last year as well....my agent looked into it and found that he could place it under the collector/classic vehicles and my insurance actually dropped in half :)

I don't have my policy number with me at the office....just tell him to make sure its under a classic or collector policy (and read the rules on them)

The one advantage to Grundy is the insured amount is "agreed" and not "stated".

KobraKarl 03-24-2003 09:23 AM

In my recent conversations with Grundy I learned the limitations on their coverave almost make it useless. you must be on your way to or from a "club "event ..........period

eticket,
I had a similar situation with Grundy. I spoke with them again last Monday and was told I would be getting the paperwork in the mail shortly. I have not received it as of yet. The first contact for a quote I made a month ago was not in their computer system. The good part is that the new quote for two collector cars was less than the first.

I spoke to Grundy and was told different stories. I want the insurance company to stand with me. There were alot of restrictions like no overnite trips, only going to club events, etc. I think they will only insurance cars like SPF's. I chose Met instead with a mileage restrictions.

grundy spells it out in the policy, "maintained soley for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades or other functions of public interest and is occasionally used for other purposes" the occasional use is generally interpreted to mean weekend recreational use. the actual insurance is CHUBB, grundy is just the agent. Most of the language in the policy pertains to who is covered, and that the car cannot be used as your daily driver or as part of your business.

I have been with Grundy since September and could not find anbody any cheaper. They do allow recreational driving. Jake

Grundy would not insure my SPF. My last ticket was for doing 43 in a 35 in 1967. I haven't put in a claim since the 70s. Good luck.

Perfect driving record, middle aged, but got a nice polite letter from Grundy saying thanks, but no thanks, to insuring my Kirkham.

I HAVE BEEN WITH GRUNDY FOR ABOUT 15 TEARS. THEY HAD ALL OF MY SHELBS,MY ERA AND MY PACKARD. ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO MY PACKARD WAS HIT BY A DRUNK, UNINSURED MOTORIST. I HAD SET THE VALUE AT 15K WHEN I INHERITED IT IN IN '74. WAS REALLY UNDER INSURED AT THE TIME OF THE HIT/RUN. DAMAGE WAS ABOUT 20K. THEY CUT ME A CHECK FOR THE 15K, PLUS ANOTHER FOR MEDICAL WITHIN TWO WEEKS.IM HAPPY WITH THEIR SERVICE.

If you are in need of coverage on your Cobra, perhaps I can help. We have been insuring Cobras without any real problem. We do require a good driving record. We have insured three Superformance Cars in the last few days. The value on each was about $50,000 and the annual premium is about $462.00. This may seem high to some but I know it is low compared to others. We do write these on an agreed value basis. If you are intersted check us out on the web at www.midwestclassicins.com or give us a call at 1-888-271-4000. I know the recent Cobra owners we insured were happy with our service.

Hey thanks for checking in Midwest Classic!

That will be good news for somebody. I'll check it out for sure.

Skeptical though, hard to find folks that cover Hawaii.........

I'm a Insurance agent and got the Grundy paperwork at a car show and looked it over. It was very restrictive on usage to the point you could not leave the vehicle unattended. They quoted me approx. $275 annually but didn't consider it as it wouldn't cover what I am using the car for. Be sure you know what is covered and is not as the policies differ greatly. The application states the usage so they could deny a claim if push comes to shove. Good Luck.

Excaliber 03-31-2004 09:56 AM

Just called Midwest, they cover 23 states, Hawaii is NOT one of them! Bummer.....

Grundy is NOT working out, I don't do "parades" and "car shows" only!

I have no axe to grind, just telling of my experience. Checked with Grundy and told they don't do cobras. Called again and spoke to agent named Chuck, who gave me a quote after I explained age, driving record, so forth. Sent premium as quoted, received check back and note, don't do cobras. Called numerous times to speak to Chuck, would not return my calls. I am not wired to do business that way, so forgot about them.

leejleej 03-31-2004 12:19 PM

In the Nov 03 timeframe I got a quote from Grundy. I sent the application with the check via certified mail. Got a response on a small slip of paper saying that they didnt insure replicas. Sure would have been nice to know that prior to me sending out the forms! This was after a conversation with a sales person.

I went with the following:

Condon & Skelly
Suite 203, 121 East Kings Highway
Maple Shade, NJ 08052 USA
Tel: 856 234 3434 Fax: 856 234 1307
e-mail: info@condonskelly.com
Web: www.condonskelly.com

Dont know if they insure whole US, but they will need photos of 4 sides, and inside engine bay.

Cheers,

Jong

You can try American Collector's insurance in New Jersey. They offer 'agreed value' coverage on Superformance Cobras. They have a mileage restriction and usage guidelines but they seem much more flexible than others mentioned above.
