Question 5.0 distributor Selection ???

I'm building a poor man's Cobra - 1956 Triumph TR3/87 5.0 motor. I'm going with a carbuerator, junking the EFI and computer. Therefore, I'll need a new distributor. Prefer low buck stock set up. Anyone have ideas on which distributor mates to the roller cam and how to set up the ignition system??

I am running a Mallory Unilight in my 1997 explorer 5.0. I ran it at first with only a coil, ballast resistor and the distributor. The Unilight can drive the coil without an ignition box and will perform flawlessley if you do not spike the electrical system(welding, jump start etc). I just added a Mallory Hyfire which helps burn off excess fuel(read less unburnt fuel and smell).

If you go with the standard Unilight setup without an ignition box it is a easy three wire hookup. Go here for instructions.

For a low buck setup use a rebuilt Ford Duraspark dist. Get one from a 1985 1/2 5.0. This is the last carb used with the roller cam. Be sure it has the steel gear.

Ther are a couple schools of thought on this but most agree on the following:

Most roller cams use a steel gear to turn the dist. So you must match up the gears....

On a roller cam use either bronze of steel
flat tapped iron cam use iron gear of bronze.

The bronze will wear out very quickly.

Ooops, if I remember correctly I use an iron gear on a roller cam (Ford Motorsport roller tappets camshaft M6250F303).

What could go wrong ?

From what I have read.....you could destroy the dist gear. However, some say that if the dist shaft is shimmed correctly you will not have a problem.

There has been much discussion on FFCobra.com about this subject.

If you use a cast iron dist gear with a rollercam, the steel gear on the roller cam will eat up the iron gear on your dist. Steel on steel, iron on iron, or bronze with either, bronze will go away anyway, so keep checking it.

Mallory told my local speed shop their standard gear will work on either cam. I bought it and it is still running fine 2500miles later.
