Big letter Goodyears
Has any one ever given any thought, attempted or looked into painting the Goodyear on another tire? If you have a nice, relatively smooth side wall tire, like the Hoosier street TDs, with no white lettering or large raised rubber lettering, how about painting the big letter Goodyear on the tire?

A friend who races a Sprint car did that because he thought it looked cool..

BTW--the Big Letter Goodyears are NOT legal for DOT-tired SCCA autocross classes. |

you could also use a cheese grater to "scrub" the tires to make it look like you had been on the track...

Painting different tire manufacturer names on your
tires is a long held racing contingency money game. Whoever is paying the most contingency money at that race is the name you paint on your tires. I think it makes a car look totally race-prepared. |
Look!!! :) I used the search feature of this site but I still have questions.... Anyone have a stencil or a computer file of a stencil that can be printed & cut out for Goodyear ?

I just purchased a set of big letter 'Cobra Tires' from Shelby & have yet to figure out a good way to keep the paint white. It turned brown within two weeks, and I tried to cut my own stencil. Good luck. It's one thing to paint from a stencil on a flat surface, but on the raised, curved surface of a tire, I found it impossible. I contacted a stencil company, but have yet to follow up on it. So far, I've re-done the paint by hand (with a brush,) twice (three times this weekend,) but the rubber just eats the paint. The tires look great when freshly painted - but this has become a time consuming pain in the butt.

What kind of Paint

I have my set of GoodYear "Cobras" slicks sitting in the trailer waiting to be installed on the car. I haven't done anything with the white letters; still look as delivered, not all that great but no discoloration like you mentioned. Has anyone tried using an acrylic paint with a brush over the existing lettering? TL :MECOOL: |
How old are they? Mine began discoloring almost immediately. Lynn Park warned me, and suggested a white spray paint applied with a q-tip. I used a brush, but that paint began to peel & brown within days. I recently used the white industrial enamel I used on my garage floor (gettin' desperate here,) which still wasn't dry after a week. I drove to the Historics in Monterey, and a couple of tires looked like 'spin-art' after the 650 miles. Sigh.
Cleaned them up last weekend, but they are already a light caramel brown. I'm going to try one, maybe two more coats, and then I'll live with whatever they wind up looking like. Lynn P. said that the reaction of paint to rubber was nasty, but this has been ridiculous. I've thought about a clear sealer, but I'm afraid the discoloration starts at the rubber. At the Peterson Museum Shelby birthday bash, there were some 100 original Cobras. Every one that had Blue Streaks or Cobra Tires was in some stage of touch-up or decomposition. |

There is a chalk like stick that tire stores use to write on tires that really works well. You have to get the tip a little warm if it has been sitting a while but it goes on really easily and stays good looking for months. Cheap too. Pat Buckley |

I dont know a damn thing about tires , but I do know a little about paint. have you tried a stain blocking sealer? maybe if you carefully painted it on first, the rubber wouldnt bleed through. good luck KK |

I wondered about a 'base coat' or sealer. It'll be worth a try - and since I just bought 'em a couple of months ago, I have a loooooong time to mess with 'em. Thanks! Durt |
How about taking the paint off? Laquer thinner is probably not too gentle on rubber. Are there any other safer methods?

I've used turpentine & an abrasive sponge. Hasn't done a thing to the tire.
