Fess up time...

The OTHER car, '94 Mitsu VR4 hit its and was just replaced with a Mitsu Evolution VIII. Fabulous machine-entirely functionally designed, and the opposite of my cobra. Not beautiful, not brutal, very technological (sprayers for the intercooler...), but faaast (0-0 in 5) and sticky (.97 on the skidpad) and AWD for all-weather driving when the cobra can't come out.

Very odd driving it though. In the cobra--well, you KNOW who looks and gestures and asks. In the Evo, it's the kids in the hopped up hondas that come by and give the thumbs up and smile. Even come by at the gas station and ask about it. Hell, I was at the Jag dealership last week (another Copple-like story there) and a guy drove into the parking lot, said he saw the Evo from the street and had to see it. Even the Jag service manager wanted a technical run-through. I do like the fact that its got 10 years of rally development. And yes, the fin works. You should feel it settle down between 80 and 100.

So, my feeble point is, that looking for a car to take the place of the VR4 led me to the Evo and, maybe a little understanding of the kids in the ricers.

Meanwhile, the Evo's a wonderful alter-ego to the cobra, now getting spiffed for VIR.

Looks like the little eclipse has an electrical fault.
The pistons took out the starter motor.

hahahahahahah i cant help but laugh when i see engines abused in this way.

Thank goodness I am not a teenager today, otherwise I could be afflicted with this moronic desire to try and make lots of reliable horsepower from a really small motor. On the other hand you have to give these kids credit for trying.

I noticed from the video that this kid is a student here at the University where I work. I hope he is enjoying walking around campus now. I have a nephew trying to sell his Eclipse now maybe I should try and hook this guy up.

having owned on a turbo AWD, and had friends race theirs, this one has a modification to the ECU, so you can just hold the throttle all the way down, and it will rev and hold at 7500 rpm, so you don't have to watch the tach.

I have seen these cars go mid tens in the quarter mile.

Stout motors, usually it is the transaxle that breaks. My guess is that he shock loaded the engine with a 2600# ACT clutch at 7500 rpm on an upshift. It also appears to be a "second" generation Mitsu, thought to be less strong than the first ones.

I'm sorry to bring this thread back to life, but, frankly, I was amazed and extremely disapointed by the amount of hate, ignorance and misinformation displayed in this thread.

Let me start by stating several facts:
The Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon/Plymouth Laser (= the same car - referred to as DSM) is not an import. The car was designed by American engineers and built in American factory by American workers. The car was never imported from overseas (unless someone believes that Normal, IL is in Japan). On the contrary, it was exported to Canada and Europe, but never to Asia.
If someone would like to classify the car as an import just because its engine originated in Japan in the early 80's, Dodge Colt, Dodge Stealth or Ford Probe would fall into the same category as well.
The 100% bone stock 4G63 6-bolt motor is able to safely support 450HP (= good for mid 11's), although a few people ran 10's on the 100% stock internals.
The 4G63 motor has excellent wear characterists. Tests revealed 15% leakdown and perfect (160 psi) compression even on high mileage (100K miles + ) engines.
The 4G63 block is proven to support over 800HP (= 400HP per liter) with forged pistons and rods - and the stock crank.
It does not take 15 grand to run 13's. As a matter of fact, it's been proven on many occassions that the 1st generation (90-94) DSMs are able to run 12-second ETs for less than 800 dollars. Jay Hass ran 12.5 with just K&N air filter ($40), manual boost controller ($50) and exhaust ($600). Nothing else.
The fastest DSM with stock motor and the stock turbo runs high 11's ( http://www.dsmtimes.org/awd.htm ).
The fastest (tube chassis) DSM runs high 7's (7.87 at 170 mph. Yes, with the 2.0L 4G63 with JE pistons, Eagle rods and the stock crank).
The fastest unibody (all steel except for fiberglass hood, all glass, no Lexan) DSM runs high 8's - on street radial tires ( http://www.shepracing.com/pictures/shep8944low.wmv ).

No matter how much one may hate it, those are facts that can't be disproved and ignoring them won't change them. The DSM community has existed since 1990 - long before the existence of aluminum wings, neon shift knobs, 5" fart cannons and ridiculous body kits that may be associated with The Fast And The Furious wanna-be's.

As for the video that started this thread, the guy threw a rod. I'm pretty sure it has happened to a few Chevy, Mopar or Ford engines as well - with the exception of rotary Mazda engines - and hope that many of you have found it equally funny and a reason to immediately insult the Camaro, Charger or Mustang the engine was in or the owners of the cars.

All this comes from an owner of stock-appearing 11-second (91-octane pump gas, street radials) daily driven 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. How many Cobra owners can say that? None.

BW64,,,,,lighten up, it's not about being "ignorant" or filled with "hate". We drive "old school" kind of cars. While I understand the "logic" of the Mitsu, where it's made etc. by name alone it is STILL a Japanese car. The Hondas that are made in Tennessee get the same respect as the Hondas that are made in Japan. I still consider them "rice burning" imports. Not a bad thing, could be a good thing. But it is what it is!

To me it doesn't matter where the Mitsu is made or who designed it, it IS an "import" for all intents and purposes. Ignorant? Nah, it's PUBLIC perception, a "stigma" if you would. Mitsubishi sure don't sound like a name from the heart land I grew up in, LOL

Anyway, I see the "bashing" here of the Mitsu as all in good fun. Nothing different than a lively discussion between a Red Skins fan and a Dallas Cowboys fan. They "love" to hate each other on "game day", and share a beer after afterward. Their both good people in the end, it don't mean nothing when the smoke has cleared.

I recently spent some time with the Mitsu group at a local cruise in. VERY knowledgable,and proud of their machines. Some awesome stuff, high tech stuff. They too enjoyed checking out my Cobra, they loved the "old school" approach to performance. Come race day at the track, I will show them no mercy, ha ha. And on the short course, I WILL eat their lunch without remorse! Then maybe I'll cruise with them on the way home, their a great bunch of guys!

I DONT CARE HOW FAST IT IS, ITS STILL UGLYAND HAS NO RESALE VALUE. When yourack up 150,000 miles on that thing you throw it away! I cant imagine anyone in the year 2030 wanting to restore any import. They are not engineered that way. Cars of the past were engineered to last forever (assuming it is taken care of) cars today (even Cadillacs & Lexus"s) are throwaways!

A lot of you guys are beginning to sound like old fogeys....you can take any of the comments made here, change the car to 'TBucket
and fit right in a past generation. Change it to 'Hot Rod' and fit right in to the 50's. It's really odd for a bunch of 'car guys' to be so negative on 'car kids'. What do you want them to do...go buy a 55 Chevy to work with so you can relate? Let's own up...the Honda civic IS THE 55 Chevy of TODAY! Let's not forget that a lot of these kids actually work on their own cars, which is saying a lot more than just having a wallet big enough to pay somebody else to build a great car. If a few of you would stow the attitude for awhile and go out to meet some of these kids, you'd find out that most are preety good kids. And yes, tastes change, but a fast, clean car is STILL a fast, clean car. I may not like it, but I can appreciate the effort.

....actually, I like it! The new technology is pretty cool stuff. And there ARE some Cobra owners with a lap top for "tuneing" sessions, cool.

In fact I have a Yamaha V-Max 1200 V-4 Mad Max and we have two Japanese enduros in the garage.

What I think IS ludicrous is the import SEDANS and other silly cars running around town sporting GIANT 2 foot high spoilers ! :LOL:

I am thinking about installing a giant pink spoiler on my 4 x 4 International scout II as part of it's restoration. That'll teach 'em :3DSMILE:
