Side Pipe Temps
I am starting to like this,like calling a tech line and actually getting someone with exerience ,Now
Any one know how hot the side pipes get on these things ?I was thinking of powder coating a set,it is hard for me to belive they would get too hot for this. Next thing,any one ever had these apart ?I am looking for the right sound versus noise balance,I have a stock black set that came with the car,,WAY to restrictive,a stainless set that are about right on loudness,but the stainless gives them a funky ringing tone,and I have a set of straights,,fun but too loud,I am wondering if I can cut the stock ones at the weld,,remove and alter the baffleing,,any one tried this ? I am not sure what kind of baffels you have, but I have a friend who just races his Daytona Coupe and he had the straight side pipes and they were so loud the track made him tone them down. He ordered some baffels from some place and you can get them in 2 or 4 units. They just slide down inside the pipe and then you drill a small hole and put a screw through to hold them in place. You can add or take out as many as you want. I think his pipes are 4" inner diameter the same as mine. If you think that would work I can call him and find out where he got those baffels. Ron |

Since most cobra sidepipes have the collectors in them, I would guess they get too hot for powdercoating. It would probubly change colors on you, up at the front part.

Ceramic coating is only way to go.This also reduces temp significantly however it is still very hot.Powder coating wil not work. chuck

The exhaust baffles mentioned earlier could be the Car Chemistry brand inserts that Summit Racing sells. You can get them in various numbers of discs and through-pipe diameters, but I have never tried them so I can't comment on their effectiveness. I really doubt they do very much good, but who knows? Maybe someone else has tried them in their Cobra and will share his opinion.
Another type of insert I have seen is the spiral baffle type. Again, no personal experience, but some people have tried them. The third type, and probably the most effective sound control, is the Hooker Header baffle inserts that fit into their side pipe systems, but you can buy the inserts and slip them into your own side pipes. They also have a glass pack insert. I have glass pack cores (not Hooker) on mine and they are LOUD! I think, too loud, but my Cobra buddies all like the sound of my car. |
Measured mine yesterday with an infared and it was hot!! 400 degrees.

Spiral Turbo Baffles
Just ordered a set of spiral turbo baffles for my sidepipes from Jim at STS. They should be delivered this week. Back in Black has installed these on his Cobra and likes them very well. You might search for his threads.

I had mine poweder coated last year with a high temp powder coating and they don't discolor ever. Had them done is silver, and easy clean up if they get road grime on them....one of those green srub pads and some soap, look just like new. Another member near me, has same coating and buffed and polished it to give it yet another look, but you can only do this about 3 times, then they have to be redone. I think price is around 200.00 to have it done

I had mine powder coated with the high temperature black finish. The first time I started the car, I was breaking in the cam and did not want to shut off the engine for twenty minutes. The sidepipes started smoking then started burning! I sprayed them with a hose to keep the flames down until the cam was done. I lost about 70% of the coating. Now, I just use hot paint. Bye bye $200.

Mine were about 360F up in the 4X4 area. Jet Hotted they cool pretty fast.

My pipes are jet hot coated flat black. They run much cooler then my previous set of pipes on my ERA which were stainless (VERY HOT!). They also cool down quicker and don't discolor.

umm,,,thanks for all the talk on thi s,,I am still a bit undecided,I have a buddy in the powder coat business,,and it is free to me,,But I didnt like the sound of the flames,,still hard fo rme to belive they get that hot,for powedr coat I mean,,,I sell and play with harleys and on the air cooled v twin,,powder burns off only maybe 4 inches from the port,,but they will sure sizzle flesh for the full length,,still not sure,,

I've tried the car chemistry baffles (3 section/3.5"). They"re really are only good for a db or two. Talked to them about using a second set and one of their techs said don't bother. They really are for pulling a few db's out when you are at a track that has sound level limits.
I replaced them with the spiral tube baffles from STS and hit purrrrrrfection. They especially make a beautiful note when you put the pedal to the metal. Thanks to Back-in-Black for the recommendation. |

You guys run cool! On a good run at the strip- pre muffler but post collector, I hit 1125, normally they run at 825 to 975! Ya think an extra cylinder per side makes the difference? :D DV PS. powder coat will NOT hold up. Usually good for maybe up to 400 degrees, certainly not over 500. Ceramic coat only please! |

Actually an extra 3 cylinders for side,,My point being Air Cooled motors run hotter than liquid cooled,,thus expel hotter exhaust, Anyway,,I guess Powder Coat is out,,how much does the ceramic coating cost ? I may just go with the high heat paint,, thanks,again,,Tim |
