We haven't played "Mystery Car" for a while

Try this one. It might be too easy, though...

Off topic:

Whats that silver disk just inboard of the wires, looks too big and too far out for a disk brake rotor, plus I don't see any calipers.

aumoore 05-18-2003 07:41 PM

The silver disk is a brake cover and I bet there are drums behind the disk. The car looks like a 260 Cobra but the frenched in headlights are not like any cobra or AC Ace-Bristol I have seen?

My guess is a late model 289 Cobra replica with custom bodywork.

Top of windshield is different (no frame piece).....
Odd hood scoop.......
And is that a door handle I see????

PatBuckley 05-18-2003 09:53 PM

Lancia?

Allard??

Jamo 05-19-2003 10:49 AM

Pat's right.

Specifically, a 1953 Siata 208S with a 2.0 litre V-8. Owned by Mark Gessler. Winner of R&T Trophy.

Road & Track (June, 2003) at page 11.

A lovely little beast.

Bill Wells 05-19-2003 10:58 AM

fix..insider info....you told pat the answer ...fix...but , is it REAL ? LOL...bill

Jamo 05-19-2003 11:02 AM

Trust me on this...Little Buddy knows all kinds of strange things on his own.

Ask him about the alphabet.

btsai 05-19-2003 12:37 PM

Well, Pat was right, as Jamo correctly pointed out. Glad I'm not the only one who reads Road & Track. When I saw the photo it struck me how much it reminded me of the early Cobras -- just narrow the mouth of the Siata and voila -- pretty darn close to the AC original. Just think -- that shape, an english roadster, a V-8 -- in 1953!

A few years back I drove a Siata with a Chevy V8. The car had been shipped from the factory to the States sans engine and the first owner installed a 265. At the time, I thought this would have made a unique and fairly quick vintage race car. Unfortunately, the then current owner had replaced the front suspension with Mustang parts...sigh

They should have sued shelby for copyright infringement, or style infringement, or idea infringement, or whatever the hell he sued everyone else for.

PatBuckley 05-19-2003 03:07 PM

I didn't recall seeing it in R&T - although I do read it. (I hate their new format with those huge pages.....)

I remember seeing them when I lived in Italy as a boy....

A different view of the Siata 208S

Anyone remember...

..The Siata Spring 850? "Retromobile" built on a Fiat 850 chassis back in the mid 70's. I always thought Siata was a joke due to that car, I didn't find out they were building real, Italian exotics until years later.
