I've always wondered why there wasn't more effort put into lowering the cars back then. Several pictures (from different sources) show a LOT of body roll. The first thing I did to prepare MY ride for the track was get it as low as practical. Seems to me they were a good 5 or 6 inches in height.

"Open track" racing today. I did "fair", had a great time. A number of cars clearly faster than me, but I DROVE mine to the track AND home! Raced ALL day, from 9 am till 10 pm, whew, LONG day.

I will venture a guess Ernie, although I suspect you may already know. It is a typical egg/chicken thing. Tire and suspension components(shocks) have made great leaps in their abilities. Most street tire and good factory shocks of today are much better than some of the most expensive comparable parts of the era. I think the leaning , although not considered desirable now, was a needed part of the handling. I think that the tire would have been more likely to break loose if they had made the suspension any flatter. I could be totally off base, but my experiences with the components from the period and the components as they evolved to our current pieces makes me think that. I know you are just a young pup (LOL) so some of that stuff probably happened before you were born.
