Counterfeit cars are an embarrassment part 2
I spent some time talking to Mike Blake, editor at Kit Car, at DVSFIII. Naturally the SAI add came up in conversation. Mike seemed none to pleased about the add and some time ago put an editoral comment on Kit Car's site.
Here it is:

No matter if they are replicas or Counterfeit or whatever, I tend not to think of many of the newer Cobras as "kitcars" period. What they are (to me) are hand fabricated racing chassis' with the best off-the-shelf racing suspension, engine, components etc, and by the way, a copied Cobra body to cover it all up. These cars are more closely related to NASCAR than to your average production car. Maybe we should start calling NASCAR cars "kitcars", after all, they are made from hand fabricated racing chassis' with the best off-the-shelf racing suspension, engine, components etc, and by the way, a copied ? body to cover it all up.

I agree with Cowtown, except for the giving horses beer ( why waste the beer on the horse? )
The "real" issue was beat to death ( sorry about that ).
Mine is a race chassie with off-the-shelf parts and a few well fabricated parts to make the car better than original. The body just happens to be a cobra.
Mine is a custom, NOT a Counterfeit.
Just my $0.02 worth!

Very good point!
I think NASCAR 'kit cars' would be cool! And you are right, those cars are not REAL Fords or Chebies, or Pontiacs or.....

I'm pleasently surprised the magazine would respond with such an editorial. I think it was well written.
ThePidler, NASCAR cars aren't real Fords? Impossible! I'm going right down to the dealer and check out a Taurus, I'm pretty sure you can get one with a V8 and a 9" rear end. LOL

Rick,
I was just at SAI in Vegas last month. The new 4000 series cobra bodies are copies made at the prison 50 miles away. Then assembled at his shop on a custom thicker copied frame. He then puts in an aluminum copy of the 427 engine. Then Kirkam or 2 other suppliers will give you a copied aluminum body for $20,000 more. The copy factor is the same !
The copy factor is the same !

Is this the same Kit Car Magazine who has had no problems accepting ads from assorted manufacturers through the years, regardless of their legitemacy, quality, dependability, reliabilty?
I bet I can place an AD...not AN"add" for Road Serpents and get a pretty good write up in there.
"Shelby American is entitled to their opinion, and they do make a superior car, but so do the other 15 Cobra replica manufacturers who advertise in KIT CAR, and so do the 35 non-Cobra companies whose ads you see in here as well.
REALLY?
I can only think of 5 or 6 manufacturer's who make a decent car.. I wonder who the other 9 or 10 are?
So if they are advertising in there they must be all good!
I don't think so... Since Mike is so ready to editorilize on the merits of the Shelby ad, maybe he can tell us about the other advertisers who are less than stellar in their performance when it comes to the cars they promise to deliver.
Can't we leave the politics of this wonderful car for a later date rather than so soon after we had a wonderful time seing the likes of SPF-FFR-Shelby- and many others having fun and breaking bread for, four gorgeous days?

And what a weekend it was!
It was a great weekend!
I do NOT want to stir the pot at all here. I think there are a lot of bad adds. SAI's was just one of them. It was brought up at the Fling so I thought I would let people know that he wasn't very pleased with the add either. I would agree that most marketers, advertisers don't seem to have a conscious! I don't think I would make it in that business. SAI makes a fine, fine ride.
Turk, your new ride is gorgeous! I was standing there Sunday looking back and forth between yours and the 40th anniversary one and trying to decide, bare or painted! Is the 40th anniversary one glass or aluminum? Now all I need is a BUNCH of extra money!
Let's all try and make sure that there is a DVSF IV.
Please, everyone, do not make this more than it is. It is just an FYI.

Rick,
I know the 40th. Anniversary you were looking at was aluminum. That is the one that belong to Mark Roe. Isn't that the most electrifying color?
I also think all the 40th. Anniversary models were alloy. I could be wrong.
I hope there is a 4th Spring Fling!!
Other wise Gasholes may very well decide to have the First Annual Gasholes convention.

Ad...NOT "add".

Just curious, what's not 'decent' about the other 9 or 10?

Turk and SSS
SSS - there are no names attached to the '9 or 10' manufacturers so I don't know how that question can be answered. This is old news and I debated even posting about Mike's comments. But it seems as though he was interested in folks knowing his take on the whole mess. Loading revolver now! (for the topic that is! don't get nervious!)
Turk - Yes! Loved the color. I thought for sure I would want one bare but after seeing Mark's car, I am not so sure. Strange thing is I didn't even notice the car until Sunday. Must of had my head up my a$$ as usual. I would have liked to take a closer look. For now, I will just keep on dreaming.
F.A.G. Leave it to you! That doesn't mean I have to come out to that overly liberal democratic state does it????

Sorry Gasholes but that would be a counterfeit. FFR owners already have a FAG.

If Kit Car objected to the ad so much they could have refused to run it.
$$$ again was the deciding factor I guess.

I'm guessing they ran the Ad before they realized the controversey it would generate.
Wasn't that "Embarasement" the fastest growing biggest thread (outside of the Jokes thread) ever? It was like wild fire!

Turk:
It's "real" simple, for the last several years EVERTIME Shelby opens his mouth or there is a SIA add it is the same bull$hit.
A couple of years ago there was a huge Mustang car show in the Kansas City area and I was there with my Pro Street 69 Mach 1. I was looking into Cobra's at the time and Shelby (aka. CSX4000) was at the top of my list. I asked the people at the Shelby display about the purchase I was going to make and was looking into either a "real" CSX4000 Cobra, Superformance, or ERA. I wanted to hear about the CSX4000 car. All I got was a lecture of how every other company out there were "lying", "thieving", "low quality", "crooked", "counterfiet", "living off of the blood of Shelby", "stealing the money from Shelby", etc... They then gave me a brochure and I left.
If you look at the Shelby Cobra websight, it is the first thing you see.
The CSX4000 series Cobra is a awesome vehicle, the car needs no "tainted" help from Shelby or any of his SAI employee's. All they do by their "$hit talking" is make more people want to stay away.
By the way, WE KNOW THE SHELBY COBRA SOLD BY SHELBY'S COMPANY IS A SHELBY COBRA, DUH!!!!!!!
