Spf Oil Temp?????
I was wondering what the upper limit for Oil TEMP for a 460/535. I have a SPF so what would it be in "C"...

Your oil has recommended limits
I will try and recall this from memory (dangerous) and say that the upper limit for my SB with Red Line synthetic was ~100 C on the track. Usually, on the road, it rarely got above 60C. The calculation is: F (degrees) =9/5 X C(degrees) +32 degrees. So 100C is 212 F

The coolant can run up to 220 F
So, the oil can get even hotter. Mine gets upwards of 230+ in heavy traffic conditions. But it may run cooler soon when I change to water and water wetter only. I also plan to enhance my oil cooler system, possibly with an electric fan/ forced air unit.
Ford 385 series run hot, so it seems, and so I have been told.. ? |
Motor oil should be kept below 230 F

Bud Moore recommends 220 F ( I think, age seems to effect the memory )

Ive read that the bearings run about 15 to 20 degrees hotter than the oil....and the melting point for the bearings are around 290 degrees?? So, anything more than 115c is pushing it.
Does anyone know more than this? |
Oil Temp
There seems to be a lot of ideas about this. I talked to Eric at Performance engineering and he said Oil Temp can run up to 120C without a problem. I saw 105C, he said no issues there at all.

Mine runs at 180 F. I think the sensor is after the cooler.

"An engine oil cooler such as the SVO M-6642-A101 is highly recommended - -" "Oil temperature should be maintained in the 220-270 degree F range" Actual street experience on my car - on hot Florida days in traffic, oil temp stays around 200-210 F. Once I get on open road and get some air through the cooler, it comes way down. A good rule of thumb to convert "C" to "F" is: Double the number and add 15. This appies pretty close in the ranges of oil and water operating temps. Lynn |
